Just got around to registering the new vacuum I bought on the 3rd. I want that warranty to be on record in case something goes wrong, but have you seen the list of things they ask you online or on paper? They tell you this is for a survey, but is it really necessary for my warranty to be registered, that they know my yearly income, mine and hubby's age, what I do for leisure, and many other personal questions I feel is not their business. One question was did I feel cleaning was extremely important, and did I feel bad if my house were not **** and span. Not worded exactly that way, but you get the gist. Also asked if I still did spring cleaning. Well, guess what? I didn't answer the survey, none of it. Just curious, am I being an old curmudgeon, or would you answer all those personal questions just to register a warranty?

Carolyn

Whoops sorry, posted on wrong forum, don't know how to move it. Guess I hit the wrong button at the wrong time!

I always lie on those forms...yes I'm rich and have every conceivalbe electronic item..LOL. I know it is annoying.

Gee, I usually dont even mail in my registrations.

(and if something goes wrong--I will be the first one kicking myself!!) :bgrin I hate questionaires that get so darn nosey...who cares if I am buying a cheap $20.00 radio-- how much of a income we have? YUP--they all get tossed. Corinne

I register products if they are higher end, like TV's and laptops. I don't register the new toaster :bgrin

However, I know why they ask those questions and I actually am someone who uses the information that is collected. They put that information into a database and put people into different demographics.

About 6x a year, I do upscale dinner seminars at local country clubs to attract new potential clients. I'm a financial planner / money manager. I send out wedding style invitations that my assistants hand address to people on lists that I purchase based on liquid net worth and age. I don't really use income since many of my ideal clients ($1M + of liquid assets) are retired so don't have a large income.

But, yeah, I know people "lie". Always have one or two who come in to see us for an appointment after the dinner and do not have the right asset level really... But, I've been doing this for 8 or so years and know that's part of the game.

Requiring you to fill in the details in order to register the product for a facility to which you are entitled is surely not legal??

I certainly would just not fill in the details- I am sure somewhere on the form in very small print there is something telling you this- it is an invasion of privacy and if people like Jill want this information they can pay for it- in which case you are entitled to be paid for giving it, as it is of no direct use to you and ends up getting you loads of junk mail!!!

If I have to fill it in I give the most ridiculous answers I can think of, calling it "lying" is going way to far- you need to see it from our point of view.

I was just using "lying" in reference to what Pandora said. I don't get bent out of shape even though I'm spending about $50/plate ... It's just a cost of doing business and not a big deal.

And, I really doubt it's mandatory you complete the demographic information in order to register a product for the purposes of getting the warranty. On the other hand, I personally do not mind giving that range of information when I register a product. And that has nothing to do with the fact that I own one of thousands of businesses who use the collected information in some way.

I do for most products just in case there is a product recall for some reason or another. One is ALWAYS hearing about some safety issue on a product and a person should IMO get these notices from the company if there is such a problem. And if filled in info was wrong how are you going to know about some danger etc.

That's a very good point that I had not considered! I guess I am going to register small appliances, etc., from now on along with the bigger ticket items

It is good to fill them out for recalls and such. My guess is all the personal information is purly for advertising reasons. They want to know who to gear the ads for and such. Plus if your five and buy a large flat screen tv, they may want to know who your folks are hehehehe.
