It always seems that things turn out better when you do them for others than when you do them for yourself. Last fall I purchase a faux stone fire pit for my hubby's for his b-day. I wanted wood benches, so I contacted the gentleman I get my rough cut lumber from. I needed hardwood so it wouldn't quickly rot. He had a walnut tree he was going to use as firewood, it had a bend in it and could not be used for planks. he cut it in half and I had notched some other lives of walnut for a base, worked wonderfully. A friend of the family saw it around Christmas and loved it, asked if I had a chance to get more wood, would I consider doing one for her. Well, just happened that there was still a piece of walnut with hard bend. It was destined to be fire wood.
It is still green, the seat needs to be sanded and she will seal it once it cures more, but here is the bench I made for her and her family. The back rest mirrors the wood on the seat. Delivering it on Tuesday. $20 for the walnut, $10 for old, but not vintage, strap hinges used as seat rest braces, and about $7 for the hardware ( bolts, washers, spacers, nuts and screws). knowing how much she like ours and makeing one for her, priceless.
