Just what is a micro mini???? What size is it???? People trying to find a way to market the miniature horse to non-experienced mini owners...not a good idea in my opinion.
A "micro" mini is the same as "teacup" in dogs.....purely an advertising/marketing ploy. There is no such thing in any written breed standard.

Ah, yes...but wasn't the designation "miniature horse" initially a marketing ploy to promote the smaller Shetlands?

And didn't many of the recognized dog breeds start out as variations of an existing breed? (i.e., the Thoroughbred was the result of crossing imported Arabians with English racing stock.)

Not that I'm defending anyone intentionally giving out false information, ...just a reminder of from whence we came...

Well said. Exactly what I was thinking.. when pony market crashed they called them midget ponies when that didnt put out the right mental image or bring in the $ they became Miniature horses.. many breeders acted as if they were dropped onto earth by the mini fairies something new, wonderful never before seen and ..Many became VERY rich in those early days.

Call them whatever you like but they are what they are

Thats all I was saying is whatever it is registered as is what it is...adding the word "micro" or "teacup" does not make it "rare" or more valuable. I love seeing people get duped thinking they just bought something rare, when they could have bought the exact same thing for less had they been educated.

Yep, them miniature horses are just pygmy Shetlands

: I have heard the story also of miniature horses coming about from a crash of the Shetland market but in the history I have read there was a strong interest of the smaller Shetlands way back to the days when the smallest of horses were desirable in the mines. Certain people took a very strong interest in the smallest and bred for them long before the Shetland market crashed. As early as the late 1800's many other small equids were imported into the U.S and there was several guys that are credited for developing what we know as the Miniature Horse. Interesting how different people can get something different from what they read. I think breeding for the minatures was done long before the Shetland market went down and guess history can always rewrite itself to put doubt in what one believes. One thing about it, there is a choice, and we can choose according to our taste. Mary
