Anyone ever have a horse that just won't give you their ears?

I have one that I want to show but if he won't give me his ears I don't know if I want to mess with it...

Any suggestions?

He just might not be a halter horse....

Thanks

Lynda

Giving ears is not required for halter. Some horses just don't like to give ears. As long as your horse stands well and is confirmation ally correct, that's all you need. You still should place well despite an alert expression.

A lot of times a horse won't give their ears if they are intimidated in a class. I have a filly that I showed all of last year that was like that. I never could get her over it, but she is such a nice filly, I continued to show her through the year. She ended up being AMHA World Top 10 and I am satisfied with that.

I don't know what you may have tried so I'll suggest. Have you tried to use a treat; something noisy like cellophane wrapper from candy; a small stuffed toy? In other words something that you don't always use around them at home that's not too loud but will get their attention without panicking them. The ears will usually come when they are curious about whatever you have.

We have one like this, try this, have them stand at home, have a treat in hand, don't give them the treat until they give ears. It worked for us, maybe it will work for you.
