I just picked up some Natural Psyllium Fiber to give to my boys. I was told it's basically the same as Sand Clear. (I would have gotten Sand Clear but its SO expensive and they didn't carry the smaller buckets). It says on the bucket that full sized horses that weigh 1000 pounds should get 1-1.5 scooops per day for seven days, and it says to just "give less" to ponies, yearlings, and foals. So my question is, how much do I feed my two minis? One is about 28" tall and the other is about 31" tall. So they are on the small side of a mini. Should I give them like 1/4 of a scoop, or?

Any advice welcome! Thanks.

I feed the stuff for people at wal-mart. I figure an adult weighs about what a mini weighs. However, on their package they do not go by weight they go by age. 12 and older gets 1 rounded table spoon. The stuff my friend got uses a teaspoon for an adult. I think the stuff I got has less psyillium in it.

I DO THE SAME AS KATIEAN, I USE THE WAL-MART BRAND AND GIVE 2 ROUNDED TABLESPOONS USEALLY TWICE A WEEK AS WE HAVE SANDY LOAM.

Questions for you all using a substitute for sand clear (psyllium). Do you buy the flavored ones? I got the plain flavored metamucil and my guys wouldn't touch it when I put some in their feed. Do you feed dry? Or do you mix with something and deliver it orally? Do you buy flavored such as orange flavor, do they eat this better? I had powdered dirt with a dry spell and my guys were taking in too much dirt trying to graze. I want to get something into them but so far my efforts haven't produced results. My boys even took their feed bins off the hanger, threw them on the ground and put their feet in them to try to separate out their feed pellets. thanks.

My pastures are all baby powder sand so I also use the Walmart brand " Metamucil" orange flavored but sugar free and my mini's eat it just fine. I am pretty sure it has to be fed dry to actually work like Sandclear so mixing it with water or anything else won't work. I just sprinkle it in with their feed once a day for seven days in a row, one week a month. I use about two/three tablespoons just to make sure they get enough because some of it gets stuck in the bottom of the pails and doesn't get ate. I also give them mineral oil along with it to help slide sand out, I just pour a gallon of it in with thier water and they drink it themselves just fine. Trying to syringe it to them just makes a slippery mess out of me and wastes half of the oil. When my filly sand coliced the only thing my vet did was to tube her with the oil and it did the trick so I am hoping that by giving it to them once a month it helps to clean them out.

I mix the orange flavered stuff in a cup of feed with a cup or more of water. I got the stuff with the suger in it and they slurp up every sloppy sticky nibble.

I use the walmart brand orange flavored metamucil... My horse loved it... Ate it all everytime. I mixed it with corn oil and all gone it went. I feed him 1/4 of a scoop....
