I would like your opinion on a mare..she has thrown nothing but lovely splash blue eyed babies....she is a solid with a big blaze...my question is..I looked up her pedigree and her sire is Reeces Night Hawk who carries the LWO gene.....has it been just the luck of the draw with these foals or since Reece is out of a splash sire...is it possible she just got the splash gene and no LWO? She has been bred to a LWO with splash being the results..is this a no brainer..or..good grief just test her

your thoughts please?

If it were me, I'd just test her

She could still be a LWO carrier, just the odds have worked in your favor so far..

I have a LOT of frames in my breeding program. For my money and peace of mind, it is always desirable to test them.

"Hawk" carried both genes and the splash and LWO combined makes it hard to know that they carry both genes and there are too many similarities.

The $25.00 is worth the money to know for sure before you breed your mare to a LWO stallion.

We personally test anything but a solid (with no frame heritage) that will be bred to a frame.

We used to own Reeces Night Hawk. And we have several fillies from him. He is a frame, I had him tested for that. I also think that he carried Sabino, but I never tested him for that. I am sure that he carried Splash too as one year I did get a Splash foal from him out of a solid colored mare.

I would test your mare for LWO though, just to be sure.

UGH...you, or rather your mare, has been very very lucky, so far!!

TEST!!!

And even if you are just a trifle late, well done for actually thinking of it and taking the guesswork out of it!!!

thank you for saying out loud what I was thinking but still needing confirmation from those with more experience..whew..that was a mouthful. It is not my mare quite yet....but almost and I have always loved what she throws...but my stallion IS LWO...so....looks like a test for sure..thanks guys!

Why gamble? The test is $25. Many solids will test LWO +, many that look to be splash carry it, I don't think there is any 100% way to look at a horse and say it is 100% splash and will test neg. for LWO without knowing if its parent were LWO neg.

There is a farm in particular that I am thinking of that has a solid, I mean completely solid, yearling with dark eyes, and it tested LWO +. You just never know.

Are you sure the current owner never tested her and has bred her to a LWO + stallion in the past?

As others have said, and you have already concluded, definately test. Although certain patterns have certain characteristics, many times one pattern may mimick another and be impossible to tell. Of all those, Frame is the one that has the possibility of producing a lethal foal if two LWO positive horses are mated together.
