If you are a youth can you show a horse in AMHA or AMHR and not be a member?

If you are a youth is it acceptable to show a horse not owned by you or your family?

If you show in amateur can you show a horse in amateur or open that is not owned by you?

I can only speak on the AMHR part of your question. As always, check the rulebooks for the official word on these items.

1) Youth must hold a youth card to exhibit and earn points. There may be shows that allow non-members to exhibit, but I don't know of any around here.

2) Youth are allowed to exhibit horses not owned by the family.

3) Amateurs cannot exhibit a horse not owned by an immediate member of the family.

There was a new rule came out a year ago-- for a youth to show a horse at the Nationals they must qualify under at least 2 judges to be eligible to show that horse.

As well the horse must qualify under regular rules (4 judges min of 2 shows) as well. SO if you are going ot show someone else's horse, be sure to have qualified under both of these rules, if you are planning to go to the National show.

For AMHA:

You can show as a youth without being a member, however you have to apply for a youth number.

You can show any horse in youth - it does not have to be owned by you or your family.

If you are an amateur, you or your family has to own any horse you show in amateur classes, but you can show any horse at all in open classes.

Hope that helps!

Good point! I forgot to mention those changes.

In AMHA..

As of this year (?) you have to apply for a youth membership card to show.

A youth can show any horse in a youth class (guided they follow the horse sex rules i.e. youth 12 and under can NOT show a 2yr old or older stallion)

In Amateur classes the horse must be owned by that person or their family (family as defined in the rulebook).

Anyone can show a horse in open classes but again there are rules like youth 12 and under can NOT show 2yr old or older stallions (only weanlings and yearlings). And to be a header in driving classes, it must be a senior youth (13 and up). Etc.

How much is a youth membership card?

Do you have to pay the youth membership fee for the AMHA and then get your card? Or can you just apply for a number?

Youth Membership/number ... same thing.

I think AMHA youth membership is still $5....no more than $10...but pretty sure its still $5.

Think maybe its $10 (?) in R.

Been a few years since I was a youth.

Still 17 (as of Dec. 1) and Under (as far as I know) in AMHR.

18 (as of Jan 1.) and Under in AMHA.
