Bought a SMALL OLD farmhouse, because the property is going to work well.

Started the "demolition" on one small wall this weekend, and we couldn't believe it. The wall is FILLED floor to seiling with fine wood chips. I'm sure it was somebodies idea of "insulation", but WOW are we glad we haven't had a wiring short in a wall somewhere. Looks like we'll be taking down a few more walls than we planned on!

Anyone ever seen this before???

Our family has been in the construction business for 4 generations and yes we have sen it here in Maine before. Kind of a mess to take out but better than the old rock wool (really nasty stuff). we have seen newspaper, cardboard and paper wrapping used. At least you can credit the past owners with knowing some insulation was better than none. Probably worked quite well as long as it stayed dry.

You do not want to know what was in my walls..........and what could still be in my walls...........

Anne, what I think you are seeing there is "vermiculite" (sp)

This is a material that was used in the olden days for insullation.
