I work at a vet clinic and Doc says a horse will only be worm free for 3 to 4 weeks after a deworming. When you deworm you are killing the worms in the intestines. Then there is some kind of trigger in the system that tells the larve in the linings that hey its time to hatch!! because there are no worms here.... He said if you use a daily wormer long enough (1 to 2 years) along with purge wormin 2 to 4 times a year, that you CAN be ALMOST 100% worm free. I guess this would work well if you only had 1 or 2 horses.... I have 17 so this is harder for me... I try to deworm the 3 months in the Spring and the 3 months in the Fall... the very hot of the Summer and the very cold of the Winter will kill the worms and eggs that are on the ground.

Which is why you do the Fenbendazole five day....to kill the unhatched larvae.....

And daily wormers have been found to cause resistance and lead to a worm burden...I'll see if I can find the article....

But if you read the info that comes with the wormer, this is about all they have ever claimed.

25 days does seem a short length of time, but were the horses tested free of worms three days after initial worming???

Rabbits confirmed what I was going to comment on.... the resistance when fed daily wormer... not to mention you are giving your horse toxic chemicals on a daily basis. In todays medical standards of 'chemical overload' I would be concerned about both of those things. I could eat a tiny bit of arsenic every day and it not make me sick, but over a couple of years, I wouldnt want to see what my kidneys, liver, etc... were beginning to look like!!

I worm every 2 months....never been able to stretch it out to 3. Also do the Pancur 5 day once a year, as part of my schedule. Only use well known brands, because they are more likely to work.

One friend used only "no name brands" and after 4 months was having worms show up in her horses manure. Said to her," she needed the Vet to do a fecal exam"...boy her horses were loaded. She used Safeguard, did another fecal and it came out more normal. Now she only buys the brands that are well known to work.

Also know folks that used to use the daily wormer...worked at first and then they too started having issues.
