I'm trying to talk someone out of having their 50 pound child ride a 28" mini. How can I try and talk her out of it. I need alot of facts as to why it's not a good idea

Well, can you tell her the child is too heavy? Apparently this is more touchy since you are asking for help.

Maybe try "she will outgrow the horse in SUCH a short time, why not use a larger one so she won't be heartbroken". Or, ask them is they would consider putting a bag of feed on the horse to carry it somewhere -- possibly that would be a NO, and they could see the issue. Let's face it, they probably don't pick this child up a lot and it isn't sinking in.

I tried telling her that Abby is too big for the gelding. She said that he's a horse so he's made to be ridden

I would say the child is much too heavy for a 28" mini and no doubt will cause problems for the horse.

I usually tell people that ask about children riding minis that possibly up to 40 lbs. on a 32" and above mini.

Unfortunately, there are some people who are 'right"...no matter what...you just cannot convince them. Hopefully they will at least put a helmet on the child, so when the horse inevitably bucks because of discomfort...he/she, doesn't get hurt too badly.

If they are just too dense to realize the difference between the weight a full-sized horse or large pony carries...they just can't be helped. Sigh..... Ask them if they themselves would consider riding a small pony, the weight difference would be as large. Duh.......

Might suggest they ask their vet's opinion. Maybe they would be receptive to a professional's take on it.

Have the child get down on all4s....then have mom sit on it. Now howz that feel honey?

Forget talking to the mother and talk to the child about it.

My daughters are 6 and 4 and THEY told me they are too heavy to ride the minis!! My older daughter is 49 lbs!! One of my minis is 29" and my daughter knows she is obviously too small for her to ride

Kids are kind and thoughtful of animals, explain to the child that she is just too little and it would hurt her back.

I would sit my kids on my taller minis and let them walk around the yard if they wanted to, they are taller and could handle it but a 28" mini is not suitable for riding, it is like a goat!! Just a really cute goat

It seems to me some people get more

Here's what I would do.

Have the "woman" get down on her hands and knees, and you put the 50 pound grain sack on her back and tell her to trot!

If she can do it the mini should be able to do it.
