HE IS!!!

Hotter than hades today, in the mid 90's and humid. Poor babies, they have their heavy fuzzy coats prepared for cooler weather. We are about 20 degrees above normal.

I shaved a few to help cool them off, but with all of their fighting, they were getting so sweaty, it was hard to take off the coats. So I took enough off to at least cool them down.

When I posted Deuce's pictures most of you thought he was going to be a black, but I did not think so, I thought he was a grullo. He was just too tannish, pinkish gray with the dorsal and shoulder strips.

Well, shaved enough off of him today to say he is not black, but his undercoat is tannish, pinky gray. Weird color, but he still has his dorsal strip and shoulder stripes.

I have a girl coming out tomorrow to help shave some of them down, so I will try and get some pictures of him and post them.

funny, unexpected color to get out of two black pintos. The dam has a dorsal strip, her dam was too white to tell and her dams sire was a dun.

I cant wait to see clipped pics of your little man..Strange to get a grullo out of two black horses. Didnt think it was possible. Thought you had to have dun in one of the parents... Are you sure you have the right stallion ? LOL JK.

The only other stallion that it could be is my palomino. I plan on DNA'ing the colt to be sure who daddy is.

I was just teasing you....But seriously is there such a thing as a black dun maybe one of the blacks carries dun which you cant see? I dont know much about dun genetics so its just a thought...

I thought one had to be a dun to produce a grullo, but my daughter had a grulla mare. Her sire was Little Kings Buck Echo and her dam was a chestnut boones Little Andy daughter. There was no question she was a grulla. This colt is the same color as she was.

Lol... black dun is grulla.

So either this guy has an abnormal load of foal countershading, or his mama is actually a grulla. A horse must have one dun parent to be a dun, as it's a dominant gene.

Mom is a pinto, she does have a dorsal strip, faint, but there. She just does not look like a dun at all.

He is not black as his body is a grayish pinkish tan

Oh how I wish their was a dun test!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I looked at pics of him and his mama on your site. Can't wait to see him clipped.

Mama.... looks plain old black. I agree I don't see dun on her.

Perhaps she is smokey black? And foal is smokey black as well, making the foal countershading look a little more extreme?

Beyond that, I'm out of ideas that make sense LOL!

I hope you go ahead and color test your boy. Grullo is such a pretty color.

I have been in contact with UCDavis, as we are in the process of having color testing done on our possible grullo- who also has many signs. According to them, the dorsal stripe "means nothing really". So, we are testing specifically for the dun zygosity in addition to the other tests.

There is a dun zygosity test available through UCDavis. We are having our possible grullo tested and are waiting for the results.

according to the horse color calculator at animal genetics.com its not possible to get a grullo foal out of the black/black or the black/palomino

perhaps the mare is a different color?

HI Molly-

One of the parents has to be carrying the dun gene, too, in addition to the black. A Grullo is actually a black dun.

I am going to parent qualify him. Guess I will color test him too. But when I got on line to look up grullos, there where many pictures of them that look just like him, down to the dorsal strip and shoulder barring.

As for the new born pictures of him on my web site, he looks nothing like that now. Unfolded he is really pretty, plus he is lighter than that now.

i dont think palominos can carry dun?
Any colour can carry dun. I have seen more than a few red dun quarterhorses that could very easily be mistaken for chestnut/sorrel, and dun doesn't show well on palominos either. Could be the "chestnut" parent carrying the dun gene...but one of them absolutely HAS to be a dun in order for the foal to be one.

He was not very cooperative for taking photos, but here you can at least see that he is not black. He has the strip down his back and over his shoulder. Darker head and legs.
