Sky was put to sleep this afternoon

My vet felt his eyes were different and that he looks like he is depressed, where he did not look that way last week.

Dr. Schmidt told me if Sky where his horse, this is what he'd do for him.

------------------------

After I got in this morning from working the minis, I had a call from my vet to update me on the sitation with Sky, who is my first horse and is an elderly Arab x QH gelding.

Sky is boarded near to my house and has had a sinus infection for 6 or so weeks. He has been treated with a couple different oral antibiotics and an IM immune system stimulant, all per the vet and with several vet visits.

The vet was calling to update as he was out yesterday (or a couple days ago? I didn't know...) and took radiographs since Sky's not better yet to check for a tumor or some kind of absess -- there are none. However, the infection has gone into the bone.

He is now on an IV dosing of antibiotic tetracycline, which tends to build up in the bone per the vet. However, the vet said in the voicemail that he is coming down the home stretch as to treatment options.

I think he is saying that if this doesn't work, that may be it? I called the office and left a message to see if that is what he means so I can be prepared. I do think that's what he means but I basically need that said flat out if I need to be prepared to have Sky put to sleep.

When I first got Sky, in 1994, I thought that I wouldn't be able to live without him in my life. For a couple years, I just couldn't really believe I had my own horse! And, I still love him, but I rarely actually see him (long story, which has nothing to do with Sky himself). Now, I just want him to be happy. Just a little bit ago, I called H and explained to him what is going on. He was really upset, which surprised me and makes me feel a lot worse.

Not sure if anyone would have insight into alternative treatments? Or any advice. Mainly, though, wanted it off my chest and tell you all.

Thanks,

Jill

PS here's me riding him years ago, and also of him giving me a "kiss" (trick I taught him in 10 minutes and he never forgot).

Jill, I Am sorry to hear about Sky. I am sure you will do what is best for your wonderful friend. Hoping they find a treatment that will have him feeling back to his old self in no time. (((hugs))) to you and prayers for both you and Sky. Corinne

Jill, I am praying for Sky to have a good recovery. Don't give up hope! I understand wanting to face the real facts though.

Jill, if the tetracycline doesn't work you might talk to your vet about using Chloramphenicol. It's very dangerous for people to handle (wear gloves, don't get any on you), but works great on horses. When my filly Karo had her jaw surgery last year and the infection was found to be in the bone, we eventually had to use the chloramphenicol because nothing else worked. She was on the chloramphenicol for a month, but it worked, and she is fine now.

What a big Old Lover of a horse! Will pray that he rallies for you.........

I will be keeping you and Sky in my thoughts and prayers. I'm sorry he's so sick

Iam really sorry. No words of advice but I know how hard it is to watch them get older and face the possibility.

Thanks everyone

I haven't heard from the vet yet. I think he may have called when I was talking with a client (I'm at home), but I couldn't really stop the conversation with the client to catch the other call. However, I really do think that if this doesn't work, the vet was meaning to tell me nicely there may not be other options. I'm prepared for that I think but still will at least stop wondering if that's what he meant after I do get to speak with him.

Sky has been a very good boy and really getting him changed my life in so many ways -- all of them good.

Jill So sorry to hear about Sky. Hope the vet can come up with something to help him. My thoughts and prayers are with you, H and Sky.

Okay, I just talked to the vet and before then the lady who takes care of Sky. He is not acting like he is in ANY pain at all. Eats great, plays, bosses the other horses, and grooms with his friends. The vet said he could like "quite a long time" with this and not have it effect the quality of his life.

Hopefully, this tetracycaline will work but if not, I asked him about Lindsay's suggestion of Chloramphenicol and he said he too had been thinking of just that today and that if this doesn't work, that is the next step (phew, at least there is a next step to go to...).

I kinda think Sky's in for a visit from me this weekend along with a whole buncha horse cookies

PS He is one very smart horse. When I used to ride "a lot", he could see where I parked my car and would stand quietly at his paddock gate just watching me. When I got around where he could see all of me (as in what I had on), if I was wearing a skirt, he would whinny and wait for me at the gate. If I was wearing jeans (ie riding clothes), he'd turn and just wander off!!!

It is his whinnying to me (my first horse) that made me decide to use Whinny For Me as my farm name. It still makes my heart just rise when one of my horses sees me and whinnies to me!

Jill I feel awful for you and Sky,. I hope the vet can really get this turned around for you both.

Chloramphenicol is some super strong stuff. My BIL used it on some kind of sickness he had going through his TB barn but don't know much about it except it's highly potent.

You and Sky will be in my thoughts, too!! I hope one of the meds works for him!!

(((((HUGS)))))

Oh, Jill, I am so sorry. (((hugs))) I am glad you were brave enough to make the tough decision to end his suffering though.

I'm so sorry Jill. I know how I feel about a few of my old ones and I can only imagine your pain.
