Hi,

I have been diagnosed with skiers thumb, and injury where the thumb is pulled, or bent out of its range of motion , and the tendons tear. ... I have swelling in the joint , and no strength of the thumb . I will see a specialist and have surgury next week .... Anyone had this ? I have been told by the doctor in town , who also had this injury While skiing , that it could take up to 2 years to get the full range of motion back if at all : o

Naturally it's my right hand , my horse leading hand ... Howdo horses adapt with handicapped owners ? They will have to learn that pulling is a huge NO No. With mom. Will they sense something is wrong and be careful ? I have 2 more shows this summer , but really easy shows . I am taking the "competitive " edge out of my showing . I will continue to show when I want to , when I know. That there are some nice people there to have fun with. No more expectations or needs to come home with ribbons or trophies ... Back to my question , how. Do you guys go back to cleaning stalls and handling horses with injuries ... ( I already know the answer carefully) lol

I have OA and had my thumb joint removed back in 2001, the Dr. attached the tendons to remaining bone so I can use my thumb. My whole right hand is weak but that is mostly due to the OA and all my fingers are crooked. I can still do my horsie chores, and can show, but try to get my duaghter and hubby to do it if they are available. Where there is a will there is a way, you will find a way to do what you love. Good luck with your surgery, I'm sure you will feel much better after.

Uh no, the horses are not going to know something is wrong, and will act as they normally do. So if you have pullers, I would have someone else handle those til you are able to- or learn to use your other hand. Sorry this happened- sounds painful and a pain in the neck besides!

i can lead my horses with dental floss ...i actually use this as practice for them being light in the lead line ...only one is a bit naughty from time to time ...thanks though : )

dr wants to see me ASAP ...I am afraid he is going to keep me overnight and do surgury ... I guess we will figure things out . About horses not feeling something is wrong with people ...my shetland works for a childrens hospice private hospital ...he helps the children pass away with peace , and comfort . Horses know a whole lot more then we think they do .

I did PM you, did the Dr. get back with you on an MRI or diagnosis? If you have to need surgery you will be a soft cast, so you may want to line someone up to help with chores until you have at least started therapy. You will find that you can adapt to using your left hand more often, but water buckets, hay bales, etc, you may need help for a while. Good luck.

FNA first , they think its a bone tumor : ( ... I am on my own , just asking my ponys to help me out ; ) I know they will : ) I need them now , to show me how much they care ....ive done it for them , not its time to give back , no doub they will : ) horses are awesome !!!!!
