Okay, I am majorly having a skunk problem at my place. I have one dog(a normally smart Aussie) that has been skunked a dozen times this year. My Cairn terrier puppy tangled with one and got sprayed about 6 times before I could get her to come to me! Everytime she'd get sprayed she would yipe and then get mad and go after the skunk again! Now my Golden retriever got skunked yesterday! I've put the food up at night so the skunks can't eat but they still keep coming.

Sooooo, two questions. Anyone know how to trap skunks without trapping all the cats. Once they're trapped how do you get close to take them elsewhere without getting sprayed.

Next question......anyone know of a good way to get rid of the skunk oders on the dogs?? I've tried the comercial products and they don't seem to cut it. A friend swears by beer poored on the dog.......Duke, the golden, thought that was a great idea....he lapped up all the spillage.

HELP!!!!!!!!!

Does anyone know if the tomato juice thing works to get skunk smell off? I've heard that before, but I'm not sure if it really does work! Our dog gets skunked twice a week at least during summer....you'd think he'd learn!

Just make sure they are up to date on their rabies shots!!!!

sedeh,

This will remove oder from your dogs. It really works and I have never known of anyone having to bath a second time. I have given this to several people on the forum with great results. Good Luck!!!!

1/4 cup Baking Soda

1 teaspoon Blue Dawn dishwashing liquid

1 Qt. Hydrogen Peroxide (3%)

Mix together and bath dog while mixture is foaming.

DISCARD ANY LEFTOVER MIXTURE.

Let me know if it works for you.

The best way to deskunk a dog that I've heard of is with Sunlight dish detergent--I believe you can mix it with peroxide, but it works very well to just douse the dog with the Sunlight on its own--lather him up real good & rinse & you should have a lemon scented dog.

I know someone that uses that on his bird dog any time the dog gets sidetracked by a skunk while on a hunt (dog is young & doing better all the time, but still gets sidetracked once in awhile)...the fellow always makes sure he has Sunlight along; while he's away hunting his dog stays in the motel room with him at night, so he wants to be able to get rid of the skunk smell!

A friend of mine had her dog sprayed the one day, & she tried everything, including the tomato juice--she said after she used the tomato juice the dog smelled worse than ever--different from the skunk smell, but absolutely disgusting. I told her about the Sunlight so she tried that & said it took away the odor except for a little bit of residual smell when the dog got a bit wet in the rain the next day.

de- scent the dog with "adolph's" meat tenderizer. It breaks down the proteins in the smelly stuff. get the dog wet and apply liberally to the smelliest areas, rub in and leave for a few minutes, then rinse and shampoo with mild shampoo or soap. If you use detergents on the dogs, be sure to rinse thoroughly afterwards, their skin is already sore in some cases from the skunking and dogs can have bad reactions to detergents, shampoos and scents...

About the only other thing you can do is keep the dogs closed in somewhere during the times the skunks roam. You may also want to make sure all your animals are vaccinated against rabies, horses too... skunks are notorious carriers!

I have told Sandy that some people swear by feminine douche products but being an old, stubborn ER nurse she didn't want anyone knowing she was buying it by the case. Sounds like a personal problem.......

That's just funny!!

Thanks for all the ideas! Looks like I have to load up on Peroxide(already have the Dawn) but not the douches! Kathi you're soooooo funny!

The remedy, using the peroxide, is the only one that worked for us

when our big German Shepherd got skunked.

Tried the tomato juice thing and he ended up smelling like a plate

rotten speghetti.....yuck!

The receipe with peroxide, I found on the Internet and it worked well......

Be sure to dump any remains and it can explode!!!!!!!!

I've trapped and moved several skunks before. It's tricky...You've just got to have a feel for them.

I wouldn't highly recommend it, but I know I'll end up doing it again.

I misjudged one once and I can tell you first hand that the peroxide mix helps, but only time and A LOT of washing will get that oil that holds the smell out.

I used the recipe for the Dawn, peroxide, and baking soda. (MUST BE DAWN as that keeps the oils away as skunk spray is very oily)

But... I use it a bit differently than everyone else.

Here is what I do...

First, wet the dog down with tomato juice. Yep, let the dog stand with it on it for 5 to 10 minutes if you can. If the dog eats this, no big deal as it is just plain old tomato juice.

Rinse dog off lightly, and then use the Dawn mixture to wash off the tomato juice. I also leave the dawn sit for 5 minutes if I can keep the dog from licking it.

Rinse well.

Then I towel dry with towels or old rags that I don't want to keep. Better to throw them out as they will still smell like skunk some.

Finally, I spray a product on called "No Smell". You can get this from a company called "Fosters and Smith". They are online. I spray this liberally and leave it on the coat. It works by breaking down the bacteria. It is one of the best of that kind of product IMO, and does help to kill the skunk smell on things.

Other than what I have found works best for us, time is about all one can do after that.

And I feel your pain... Our dog hasn't learned her lesson about skunks either.

Wow I must just be special I can smell mister stinky and friends every night yet my dogs to date have never been skunked...........now one dog one time must have walked through an area the skunk was using as he came back smelling like he had some mild "skunk de toilet" on .....that came out with just a regular old good brand of doggy shampoo......

as a kid we had a dog that regularly got skunked and porkied

we were always either dowsing him in tomato juice and vinegar or pulling quills

Not only my dogs got skunked I did too a few years ago! Went in to feed late one night and didn't turn on the tack room light(enough light I thought from the isleway). Thought I was feeding one of the cats and heard psst psst and then oh the smell! I ended up throwing out my scrubs and my barn shoes! Thanks again for all the recipes and tips. I've printed them all out. I have tried tomato juice lots of time but just got tomato/skunk smell! So, Dun Painted, which douche do you suggest?? Both Kathi and I are old ER nurses......in fact I still "are one".

Sandy,

I actually knelt down and pet a young one once. Like you, I didn't turn on the light and thought I was petting our black cat while he was eating. To my amazement, that one didn't react.

When you got sprayed, did you feel like you couldn't breath?

When I got it, I took a shot right in the chest and couldn't believe how absolutely horrible it was. My eyes watered up instantly and I felt as if my lungs were burning.
