I am looking at different fly control options this year and was wondering if anyone has used Solitude IGR feed through and what results they have had with it?

Would something like this be safe for mom & foal?

I am not sure about the brand solitude you are asking about, but when I asked my vet about the block you leave out for fly protection that the horses eat on, he told me not to use it. The main problem with it was there is no way to control how much they ate and mini's have a higher concentration of fat for storage of this stuff and it could become toxic to them. ? Do you feed a measured amount? I would ask my vet if in question.

I used Solitude last year and had great results. NO FLIES - not even those nasty green horse or deer flies!

Solitude is different from some of the other products (like the block that was mentioned and other products that are dispensed by weight) in that you feed a set amount regardless of the weight of the horse.

It's pricey -- $300 for 50 lbs.

Just be careful if you decide to feed it because I was told it is less effective if you have picky eaters who won't eat it.

Solitude prevents fly eggs from hatching on manure. If you have a certain number of horses who refuse to eat it, flies will be able to lay eggs on those horses' manure, which will result in flies.

I am weighing whether to use it again this year. I should mention that I also use larvae-eating fly preditor wasps in conjunction with Solitude.

Haven't used that product, but we are using Equitrol, and we are having nice results with it- also feed it along with feed. It is rather inexpensive, I think.

For miniatures I was told to give them 1/4 a teaspoon and not the full does. Does this sound about right for those of you that use Solitude IGR to control flys?

Does anyone give this to mom or foals?

The rep from Pfizer told me that you feed the same amount regardless of the size/weight of the horse. It says the same thing on their website. Since it isn't "digested" you don't have to worry about over-dosing it.

I have used Simplifly for the last two years with VERY good results. It has no organophosphates, and is OK'd by my vets. It totally takes care of flies, but I still have the little gnats that get in ears, so I still have to treat the horses' ears topically.
