Ok so it's been a weird week for me.. several people with a whole lot of nerve making rude comments or whatever. what REALLY is getting me tonight is (here's the story).....

So back in August I sold one of my Aussie pups. She was a GORGEOUS red merle female. a woman calls me and wants to come see them. Given this is the woman that calls me like 2 weeks earlier and said "no that's not good you've kept htem in the barn..they are too old to house break yada yada". they were like less than 3 months old at that time..c'mon!!! I said OK and she comes up. She plays this woe is me act about not having much money and how her daughter has all these problems with ADD and yada yada. lets just say she kind of rubbed me the wrong way to begin with (though i didn't think she was a bad woman or a bad home..just irritating). At his point the pups were getting a big older and i still had six..so i told her just make me a REASONABLE offer for them. she asks for $200 .. i said sorry i can't go that low (my asking price was $500). we finally agreed on $350 then she proceeds to say 'well i really wish you'd take $300". i mean just stupid crap like that. I even allowed her to take the pup on payments (which i don't normally do)....and this was a merle who i could have easily sold to someone else for more probably..she just insisted that was the one she wanted so i finally caved. I also am pretty certain i told her that i sell them only for pets (not for breeding). I make it an all out point to tell people when they call of visit because i feel that's important...that is usually the first thing out of my mouth..i just cannot imagine me forgetting that! lol that's just not something i've ever forgotten to tell anyone...

Ok so i've heard from her once via e-mail that the pup was doing well and i did get the final payment. I was slow getting paperwork done so the individual registration applications came in last week and i mailed them to each of the buyers. Well she sends me an e-mail tonight this e-mail.

HELLO,

I RECEIVED SHADOWS' PAPERS, THANK YOU. HOWEVER, YOU NEVER TOLD ME THAT I DIDN'T HAVE BREEDING RIGHTS, AND I DON'T THINK IT WAS RIGHT TO FIND OUT BY SEEING IT CHECKED OFF ON HER PAPERS. I DID WANT TO BREED HER ONCE BEFORE SPAYING HER AND I PROBABLY WOULD HAVE KEPT ONE PUP. I DON'T HAVE ANY PICTURES OF HER YET, BUT WHEN I TAKE THEM FOR HER PAPERS, I'LL SEND ONE TO YOU.

SINCERELY,

XXXXXX XXXXX

Ok so this just kinda ticked me off!!!

I e-mailed this back to her....................

XXXX,

I did tell you that day you came she was not for breeding. I tell EVERYONE and make it a point to tell everyone before I ever consider selling one to them and I especially do not sell them for breeding for a discounted price, infact if you wanted a breeding dog from me you would be looking at $900 and up or a co-own. If you are not satisfied with her or our transaction you are welcome to bring her back and i'll refund your money. If you want to keep her I would certainly appreciate photos. I love to see photo's of the pups and hear how they are doing throughout their lives.

Do you think that sounded too rude or did it sound ok? i really wanted to explod on her.. but I know sometimes that's not the best method when dealing with people! lol I do back my dogs.. i'd glady take the pup back... but it just really irritated me! i mean come on give me a fricken break..i dont' know of many people that will sell their dogs on a discount for breeding.. Am i wrong to be annoyed? I really and truly honestly feel i told this woman and my mom said she thought we told her too! like i said..it's usually the first thing out of my mouth when someone inquires about one!! And the woman was just so annoying to begin with with her woe is me act... I k now my mom and i were a little put out by her act ... i mean why call about dogs that you KNOW are priced at $500 to begin with..then go and try to talk someone down so much? just irritates me.. i put alot of money into breeding correctly and producing nice dogs.. i'm not against discounting..but why be so annoying about it? Now i'm really regretting ever selling her the dog just because she was annoying to begin with ...and now this?!?!?!

sorry just venting!

That didn't sound bad......and over all what a raw deal.......people like that just make me

Well honestly. I cant say that is a bad price. I have paid more and less then that for my dogs. BUt I do honestly feel that $500 for a non-breeding dog is high. BUt then again that is just me. I dont breed dogs and mine well both be fixed.

I just got my JRT for $300 as he has a conformation default. Should it not correct itself then i have to get him surgery to do so. Both of mine can be papered but I didnt bother with that as they dont need them to be pets.

maybe you should put it in writing, then whenever you sell the pup the new owners can sign the slip to say the pups not for breeding and that way they cannot come back to you,and you have it in writing so as theres no confusion, it must be hard remembering everything everbody has said, i forget everything, did i already say that lol

No, your e-mail was not rude at all. I do agree with Shane that to cover your bases in the future, you might want to put it in writing. Whenever I sell a mini and receive a deposit, I put in the basic things like that that have been verbally discussed on the receipt slip. Then a formal contract is written up in more detail.

We don't usually deal with the purebred dogs ourselves when we buy. However, almost 2 years ago we did make an arrangement with a golden retriever breeder (who is also a mini breeder) for a wonderful male pup. Because of Larry's hauling service PLUS our friendship with the breeder, we made an agreement for the pup -- He was neutered, although he was SHOW QUALITY (according to several show dog breeders in our area), and his siblings were being sold in the $900 range each! Let's just say, we did NOT pay anywhere close to that full price.

So, your pricing that you mentioned does not shock me at all..........but your buyer's attitude I feel is definitely OFF, just from our little bit of experience.

One word for you......CONTRACT!!!!

When I sell a pup, when I buy a pup, I expect a contract. It states the pup is registered and, if papers are not available at time of purchase, were guaranteed.

It states the price , which is NON negotiable ( I have shown the door to people who have tried to bargain on my rescue kittens!!)

It shows that the dog is a PET only.

I know your prices are different but I was selling registered non-breeding Sheltie pups, show quality but as pets only, for $700.00 five years ago.

I do not think your e-mail was rude at all.

Rabbit,

alot of people are selling them for quite a bit more than my prices around here too! i keep my prices low because i personally wouldn't want to pay more than that for a non-breeding dog.... even the POUND around here sells dogs for around $200!!!!!!! that's how i got into purebreds..it was almost as cheap to buy a purebred as a mutt! We do not sell them for breeding to protect my own lines and the breed (my own little small part in trying to stop poor breeding habits..even though my dogs are good healthy dogs) I'm not in it for the money but lets face it..when you do breeding correctly.. there's not a whole lot of money made. By the time we've paid for hip and eye checks , tails, dew claws, shots puppy food and vet bills that occure (such as C-sections ect) .. i usually don't HONESTLY make a whole lot! my prices usually tend to be non-negotiable and i have also shown people the door.. but these pups were getting older and i had six of them with not much intrest (not sure what the heck was going on.. the last litter before this sold like hotcakes). ...i think the economy just sucks this year and it has made it hard. other breeders have told me they are having problems too. i don't feel like my prices are way out there. she MIGHT be able to find one for 100 MAYBE $200 cheaper than mine..but god only know's what you'd get because most of the people around here do not do health checks..dont' even know basic stuff like grandparents of the pups! I back my dogs too..where many wont. I don't feel like my prices are way out there. So far it seems that everyone else has been good buyers. not real problems untill this one! guess i should have just not sold it to her because she annoyed me! lol i wanted to tell her that day NO YOU CAN'T BUY ONE BECAUSE YOUR ANNOYING! lol. but sometimes people come on differntly than they really are.

these pups all have nice pedigree's and are very versitile.. i've had several show quality pups out of both of the litters and NONE of them were bad build even the ones that weren't quite show quality. they are NICE dogs.

I spoke to a friend about this and she brought up a good point. ... The lady obviously wasn't completely forthcomming and honest with me because she never mentioned she wanted to breed the dog..it was always "ohh she's for my little girl with ADD and all these problems" .. if she had.. lol it DEFINATLY DEFINATLY would have come out that she was absolutely not for breeding..so i guess the road goes both ways!

she just really frustrated me! i tried to do a nice thing and make the dog affordable for her and at the same time help me out by finding it a good home.. and it comes back to bite me!

definatly a contract from here on out... better to be safe than sorry. I'm waiting eagerly to see if she responds. Honestly i wouldn't have any problem taking the pup back. she was gorgeous and i had actually thought about keeping her... no qualms there! LOL.

In the mean time if anyone else is intrested in a pup i still have 3 left from that litter..they are 6 months old now..and let me tell you..lol it's an experience having FOUR 6 month old puppies flying around the house all the time!!! i'd be willing to work out a deal with anyone... BUT NOT FOR BREEDING! lol

Another suggestion, if there not for breeding why not hold them and fix them before you sell them? Or hold them until the buyer has the money for them to be fixed by your vet.

NOOOOOOO do not tempt me

I have never ever thought I could love a dog of this mentality ( I love chows and lgd's and cats) OMG I am sooooo in love with my aussie he is the bestest boy and is quickly learning how to help with the sheep and general farm chores...he is also an excellent pillow holder downer

...and since I have zero desire to ever breed dog's they all get fixed/tutored at my house

Hi Boinky,

All I can say is there is one of 'them' in every crowd!!

She is just one fo those wants everything for nothing!!

You practically gave the puppy away, it is always the buyer who wants the most that expects to give the least.

I sold my lab pups over 2 years ago, I have since stopped breeding my labs, for $800 with limited registration. No ifs and or buts!!!!!!!!!!!! I could have sold them all, 10 of them, 3 times over. They were excellent quality pups with both parents being titled dogs with all clearances and excellent predigrees. IMO there were 2 show quality pups in the litter. One I kept but she now lives with a friend and she is a champion and the other dog was sold on limited reg too even though he was fabulous because the people had no interest in showing.

That lady is just being one of those annoying buyers.

I would say though, before I even showed anyone a pup I sat them down and went over everything and explained that all pups were sold with a ltd reg and each pup went home with their paperwork stating this status. That way there was no Q's after the fact!

Now if only I could be half as smart when it comes to buying horses and making sure their paperwork was 'really' in order I would be way ahead of the game!!

It seems I am only good with contracts when I am selling

Isn't that the truth

!!!!!!!

As if someone in their right mind would say yeah give me $350 for a bitch and then here's the papers and go right ahead a breed from her, when they normally ask $900 or more
rolleyes.gif
!!!!! I also don't see that you're asking too much for your Aussies, as here DownUnder, Aussies are sold for around $800 for pets and a lot more for show/breeders.

Others are right.............I would also suggest a contract, so that it is made clear to both parties, and so that you're not questioned on whether they were told it was for a pet only.

With my Burmese, I have the kittens desexed before they leave, so I don't have to worry about them becoming a 'backyard breeder' or they can have just one litter of kittens, and it's also for my own peace of mind. So far it has worked out great, and all my babies have gone as pets (already desexed), but if at any time I sell one as a show/breeder, I will probably co-own the cat or put restrictions, and most importantly put it in the form of a CONTRACT.

I hope it works out for you.

you really need to write up a contract spelling out everything. this is what i do so that there can be NO misunderstandings. I email most people contracts before they ever come to the house.

LOL fiona,

It's not really funny... but geesh you just have the worst string of luck!

See that's the thing.. you all are very right.. i DEFINATLY need to start doing a contract i guess..but i ALWAYS discuss the not for breeding..usually when someone calls it's the first thing out of my mouth "well doyou want it for breeding or for pet" and then proceed to explain they are not for breeding....it's just something i always do (i cannot IMAGINE i forgot to tell this woman..i'm not convinced i didn't..lol i just suspect it's another one of her ploys.. "gee if i say you didn't tell me.. you have to take it off" lol). I've thought about doing the whole spay/neuter thing before they leave..but i honestly think around here with the price of spaying and neutering it would be far far to cost prohibitive for me! i mean it costs over $100 per animal to do that here! My litters have been 10 and 12 pups from both litters..that's a whole lot of money! lol.. not to mention it costs me quite a bit per pup for shots/tails/dew claws/registry fee's... we are talking i probably wouldn't ever break even on them.

Runamuk,

you hit it on the bullseye..they aresome of the best dogs..i have yet to meet an aussie idon't like! i love dogs ..but i've met dogs in other breeds i didn't particularly like! i know they probably aren't for everyone..but i have yet to meet someone (unless they hated dogs to begin with) that didnt' love all of my aussies. they are great! (part of the reason i'm suprrised they haven't sold this time around). ad just came out yesterday and i am FINALLY starting to get calls. though if you ARE intrested e-mail me! i'm sure we can work something out!
