I always aim to accept people's different beliefs and attitudes, but I'm like Jill -- I don't trust people who don't like animals, and if this man is indeed a cat hater or worse, a cat killer, I would definitely put the kobosh on the personal friendship and maintain a polite business relationship.
As for religions, many fundamentalist sects believe that animals are lesser beings, here to serve us, and even when they encourage kindness, it is of a paternalistic nature, not born out of respect.
I believe that we humans are amongst the lesser of the animal world. We could only hope to live up to their limitless dapacity for love and forgivenness. I more often consider animals rather than humans to be my friends.
I am civil and polite to everyone, but I reserve friendship for those I truly respect. I do not need anyone in my life who does not truly love animals.
