Every year I fill my children's Christmas stocking with various items such as toothbrush, toothpaste, underwear, socks, & candy canes.

Imagine my surprise to learn that my 11 year old son wants different things in his stocking this year.

I've already spent more than I should, so I am looking for some ideas!! Can anyone help? PLEASE!!

Scotch tape, an orange, sample sized toiletries, M n Ms (my aunt always gives me those!) a cheapie little windup toy (we sometimes use those as favors at the dinner table, a fun ink pen or pencil. Any kind of Christmas candy. Movie theater gift card or iTunes, etc.

For many years now we have ONLY done stocking stuffers. We're so 'rich' that we don't really need anything. So what we do is think about the things the recipient likes to do and eat and go with that. Things we usually get:

mechanical pencils

puzzle books

pens

markers

canned corned beef (my hubby's favorite)

bubble bath

pomegranite

assorted candy (Mounds for me, chocolate covered cherries for him, candied orange peels for mom)

books from the used book store

slipper socks

cheap gloves

chap stick and lip gloss

breath mints

dog and kitty toys/treats

theme magazines (quilting, etc)

Actually, a trip through a good family hardware store is great for finding stocking stuffers. You can get some great stuff there.

Hope this helped to give you some more ideas!

I always put a toothbrush in the girls stockings (still do and they are in their 20's

), small soaps/sample cosmetics & lotions, hair accessories (scrunchies), socks, candy canes, $$, small costume jewelry, fruit, hoofpicks, horse treats .......

I don't have kids, but do have teenage nieces, they are easy...makeup, lotions, costume jewelry, paperback books.

I googled the question and here is what the rest of the world says:

sports cards

some sort of treat like candy or cereal bars or something that he does not often get to eat

peanuts (believe it or not, I used to enjoy getting these)

computer games

cds

mini flash light key chain (and stealing someone else's idea add a soccer or football)

one-chore-free-day coupon (I loved getting these just type This coupon is good for one day of no chores, when you want to use it, give it to me at the beggining of the day

classic candy cane!

handfull of hugs and kisses (the candy)

orange

pocket calculator

mini board game

gift card

money

some sort of clue to one of his big presents, like when I got a cd player, their was a cd in the stocking, or a computer game for a computer, ect

book, maybe a sports book (like on a famous sport player)

His own small Bible,Comic books,yo yo,gloves ,marbles,

pick up sticks, card games, fruit and candy just to mention a few.

Definitely something like rechargeable batteries and a charger if he's into portable gaming. Also, some magazines, like for x-box 360 or a guide to a game he wants for christmas. Gift certificates are also pretty awesome, like GameStop or Microsoft points, Itunes cards...

Even novelty stuff like a fart machine would probably make him happy, although stuff like that may drive you crazy.

games for a video games system he may have, batteries, earphones, itunes gift cards, or and electronics store gift card like best buy or radioshack

I think I'd stay away from the fart machine...lol

One thing we have always done is the little box cereals so that everyone can have one for breakfast if they choose. Even my adult children still love to get them.

I think I shall take your advice and stay away from that!!!

Thanks for all your input and I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one who gives toothbrushes!! I did have a friend from southern Pennsylvania send me some real coal. Perhaps that would make a nice stocking stuffer.

Well, probably won't fit well for an eleven year old boy but, I have three teenage girls and a few years back I started putting kitchen and household items in their stockings to help them when they move out. They love it!

If you have a dollar store they are fun to shop at for some little trinkets.

I remember when I was a little girl, I would get a "bottle" (yes a glass bottle) of pop in my sock. That was REALLY something special to get since we weren't allowed sweets much.

Now I get everything from duct tape to lock de icer to batteries and candy. All kinds of neat useful little things.

Oh, thought of something else. About tne years ago my husbands truck was broken into adn all of his tools were stolen. Now this is not all that big of a deal, tools are tools, but, these were all tools from his Grandfathers and father. They werer just odd things that his Grandfather had made and things that had been picked up along his working in construction. So, they meant a lot to him and most are not replaceable. So, each year I go and I try to find the oddest tools I can and I stuff his stockign with all kinds of weird tools. His stockign usually runs me more money than his actual gifts but he loves it and the funniest thing is, each year he goes oh what is this for?? And every single year he ends up needing that very tool for something. LOL Your son, depending on his interestes might enjoy his own tools, or his own fishing lures, or hunting stuff. My son is ten and I won a contest for a duck call so he is getting his very first own duck call in his stocking this year.

MY parents would always stuff the toe of our stockings with oranges...and we hated it!!! LOL

...and here I was going to say how much I've always loved getting oranges and tangerines!

I LOVE the fart machine...it is so perfect for my 52-year-old brother! I always try to find something warped for him, along with the most unusual beer I can find (Old Peculiar was a favorite).

I know this is a slightly older topic, and this idea won't help you this year, but I thought I would list what I do, for next year.

I do a stocking for my husband, our dogther, and my mom.

(Yep, I said DOGther.)

All year long, I send away for *any and all* free samples I can find. You'd be surprised what you can get for free. I've gotten full sized cleaning products (though that is rare), kitchen supplies, food, coffee, gum, candy, full sized razors and replacement blades, clothes, dog treats, dog foods and more. If you send for every free sample you see, when Christmas comes around, you have real cool stocking stuffers and you didn't pay ANYTHING to fill them!

It pays to be frugallly thrifty.

Well, okay, cheap!!!

My son is a bit older but hard to do for stockings too. He is into hunting so now it is small things that he needs for that. I also got him the Jones Candy that he likes, we don't do much sweets through out the year. My daughter is so much easier to do because I can do horse related things.

my mom still puts socks and underwear in all of our stockings (oldest is 27 youngest (me) is 20). we also always get a kinder egg surpise.

This is my frist christmas not living at home and i have to do a stocking for my boyfriend. I put alot of candy in it because his parents almost never gave him or his brother sweets in thier when they were kids. i got him a USB key as well and as a joke i got him a scrubber brsuh for doing the dishes because he always complaines when he has to wash them lol.

if you have a coffee lover getting those small bags of different fancy kinds of coffee go over well.

Everybody has a lot of great ideas. I love the tool idea. Well, if I'm not stranded because of weather.....I'm going tomorrow for the stocking stuffers, then I'm done!!! Thanks everyone for your responses!

At our dollar store near here they have little character face cloths and they are package really small and then when they hit the water they loosen and come to regular size. My son finds them funny. Little Hot Wheels cars are about $1. My son likes Pokemon cards so some of them are going in. I also last year got him a little wooden treasure box from the dollar store and he loved it and stores all those weird things that boys collect in it.

All I can say is........when it comes to our 11 year old..........and stocking stuffers..........THANK GOD FOR THE DOLLAR STORE!

Mia's into Bella Sara stuff right now (horsey fantasy stuff/website), so she'll definitely get cards for that, a few candy items (we don't do much candy), a few inexpensive movies (the kid's crazy for John Wayne, thanks to her Dad), Hannah Montana socks and odds and ends
