tail rubbing

I have a 2 year old gelding who is rubbing off the top of his tail. He has been dewormed regular, and I rotate the wormer that I use. Any suggestions on what to do. To cold to completely body clip still has lots of winter hair, we are waiting for some heat from the sun. Thanks Tammy

You can try cleaning his sheath. Quite often that makes them rub like crazy! Also give him a good scratch on the inside of his back legs and thighs. When they start to shed and its warm out the hair there kind of gets balled up and itches.

A mixture 1/2to 1/2 of Listerine & baby Oil simetimes seems to help stop the itching as well. Also make s the tail glisten & gleam as well.

I use an equal parts mixture of scope and baby oil and massage it into the top of the tail and it seems to help with the itching. Always do this on the bridle path after clipping also. I always keep a bottle of this mixture on hand as it seems to help with itching. They sure like to rub this time of the year when they are shedding out. Like Amy said you can also use listerine but I have found sometimes it is a little strong.

I use MTG and pour it all over the top of the tail and massage it in, has worked for me in the past.

Whitney on the forum told me about lime sulphur spray. It is a garden product for scale insects and rust (fungus). 1 Tbsp per gallon of water; I put it in a spray bottle. Once you mix it up, it only lasts about a week or so and you have to make a new mixture, but it is very effective. Does not smell good, though. Applied a couple of times on dandruffy areas or tails and you will see a marked improvement. I've had better luck with it than with Listerine. After I clip this week, I am planning to bathe my boys with it. On tails, I try to get some on the end of the tail bone and also spray it at the top of the tail.

If you can just trim the bridle path and around the tail to relieve the itch, than spray part Listerine with vinegar, can also add water, makes a good mixture.

Must be done daily for the next week.

I had this problem with two mares I purchased. My vet said they had a mite that comes from wood fencing. I was a little skeptical, but he suggested an accelerated regime of wormer and within 3 weeks no more rubbing tails off. I don't recall the dosage, but if it is a possibility, it is an easy fix.
