do you feed it daily ? Or do you feed it once a month for a week or?

Lisa, I don't feed it for that purpose but I do think those who do feed it whole (which you probably know, but for others...). I do use it, ground, as a coat enhancer and it's awesome for that purpose.

Yes I feed it whole everyone gets 1 tsp a day and then for 5 days they get 1/8 cup not sure if that is enough. I do know that this time of year seems to be a big one for sand colic though

Lisa... with some reasearch for work we settled on 1 cup for every 1,000 lbs the first ten days of each month. The flax seed must be whole, not ground.

You feed it whole to clean out sand that may be in the gut or just to make them more regular? Sorry, I'm not sure what the reasoning is. I"ve fed it to my fullsize horses to get a shiney healthy coat, and for added fat. I'd like to find out, as my mini is in a grassy lot, but there is one spot that he likes to hang out that is all sandy and I'm worried about a problem. Any info is great, thanks.

What I'm told is that, because the seed husk gets sticky when it's wet (gluey, even), that surface picks up sand and moves it out through the exit, so to speak. If you grind the flax seed, the horse's gut can digest it, so that's why the whole seed is used for sand clearing, while ground seed is good for skin, coat, etc. - good oil and vitamins in there.

Lisa,

I have been feeding it whole since Kim told me about it (Thanks Kim!). I feed it daily and never increase or decrease the amount at certain parts of the month. After some research I have found that you can feed it dry and I we are feeding about 1 1/2 tablespoons every day for the minis. (16 tablespoons to a cup)

From my experience, our cases of sand colic went from 2 in the first 6 months on the new farm to none in 4 years from the start of using flax. All the horses are still in the same dry lots now that they were when we had sand colic.

we feed whole seeds soaked, along with bran, one week out of each month. we have not had a problem with sand colic since we started either.
