Ok, this is a pet peeve of mine. I have seen alot of people on here get down on other for there bad spelling. Yes there are spell checks or what ever. That is not what this is about.

I see alot of you who wont give people the time of day or a chance because they spell bad.

Just wondering have any of you ever thought that bad spelling could be part of a learning disablity?

HOw some of those comments that have been made in the past could actually be hurting some people. Most know if they are bad spellers, however there are a few who truelly can not help it. But get told they are not respected and that people might think more of them if they could spell.

IN a perfect world, everybody could spell, have perfect grammer and what not. But we dont live in a perfect world.

So to some of you, please think about what your going to say before you do it and how it might affect others.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANKYOU!!!!! you are 100% right, were not her to put on a show to show we can ''spell good'' its a maturity level and the fact that we TRY! comeon people, nobody's perfect, and some people just cant, and its rude!

Thanks so much for posting this Ashley, I though I was the only one thinking this!!

No problem Gage. I have been thinking this for a long time, and have expressed it in pms to a few that do it alot. I was just gonna keep my mouth shut but just couldnt any longer.

That is all a part of the learning process, the better you think of yourself, the more you try and make yourself look better.

People judge you, be it right or wrong, they do judge you by your actions. If it's vocabulary, spelling or comments. As you grow, in age and wisdom, you will notice that in people.

If you are trying to make a point about something and want people to take you seriously you can at least make the effort to put forth your best effort.

your right Farmhand, but some people just CANT! My 18 year old brother cant even spell ''went'' you HAVE to take that in consideration, what is the big deal about spelling anyway?

In my opinon with a few exceptions I have seen on here most do, do there best at spelling.

My point..............the language part of my brain dont function I dont think. I have never been good at spelling, grammer or reading. YOu could give me a 5th grade book, I could read it over and over again. Say like 5 times and I still couldnt tell you a thing I read. My brain just dont work right in that aspect. I was in learning class all through grade school, made to write my misspelled words 50 times each, still cant spell. And if you asked me the difference between to, too, and two, with the exception of the number I couldnt tell you. I couldnt tell you the difference between there and their either.

And TRUST ME, I have tried to learn all this. I just dont think my brain is made to know it.

OK....for the record spelling errors don't bug me...some are hilarious especially in want ad's.....I think on a forum like this it is the

hay u wanna go 2 the show w/me nxt wkend....type of stuff that gets annoying.....if kids want to cyber speak with slanguage while IM'ing that is fine but on the forum they should have the courtesy to attempt to use proper language
wink.gif

notice I often do the .......... well that is because I am notorious for typing on here how I talk and I talk fast...in big huge run on sentences and rarely ever pause for air
biggrin.gif
and that is probably almost as annoying as cyber slanguage...but tuff nuts you get me the real me take it or leave it.....

Ok, I'm one of those that tends to say I don't like to see bad spelling, but my problem with it is where it is used as advertising or representations of their farm, business, or whatever.

I am not all that concerned with it in a forum like this, as I understand that some people DO have learning disabilities, and I can look past it.

Heck, my grammar is HORRIBLE and I'm sure there are people judging me for it.

Doesn't bother me!

I even make typos and misspell, but you bet if I'm going to run an ad for my farm or business, or commit something to permanency that has consequences, I will either ask someone to look it over for me, or find a way to proof read it or use a spell checker, etc.

In other words, if you know you have a disability, ask for help with things that are important.

Just like if I could not walk, I would need to ask for help to get up and get out of the house. Same goes for problems w/spelling or reading, etc.

No shame in it. Don't worry so much about what others think of you. If they are going to avoid your posts or responding to you because of your disability, then it is THEIR world which is growing smaller, not yours.

I have a sever learning disablility and it show in my spelling- - I use spell check - but when I am given the options for correction some times I can't figure out which ones are the right ones- and it gets worse if I am tired or rushed or having a bad day and can't concentrate 100%. So I try to keep my answers short as I know it upsets some people, I would hope that it doesn't reflect on me as a person- but if it does oh well, I can't please everyone, and it is a minor part of me.

As long as you put your best effort into it, do the best you can, that's all the matter's in my opinion. If someone doesn't like it, oh well, you know that you did the best you could.

I think that the majority of people on this forum can tell if you are making an honest attempt. As long as you can get your point accross. That's how I feel anyway

I am not a good speller, I know that. Heck - I just found out from reading another topic ( one I started I may add ) that I have been spelling congratulations wrong for years!! I always wondered how so many
rolleyes.gif
people could be spelling that word wrong all the time. ( I thought it was spelled with a "d" - not a "t." ) I never checked my spelling of the word because I thought I was right!!

OK I am a stickler for both Grammar and Spelling- I have NO idea how to do either- well, I think I am alright with the Grammar bit but my spelling has always been atrocious and my punctuation is psychotic- honestly, it is beyond help. That is exactly the reason I bless God for spellcheck, and I use it!!

It does give some funny results and it fails to sort out "form" from "From" and it cannot cope with misuse of capitals and it does not provide punctuation, BUT it renders my posts readable.

It is fairly easy to tell the difference between people whose posts are badly spelt because they do not consider it of any importance and then scream "persecution " when it is pointed out to them, and people whose spelling is poor.

As an ex Teacher I have NO tolerance of the first and every sympathy for the second.

how do you use spell check? i used to be a fantasic speller in school, always my mum would say when asked how to spell she would say look it up in the dictionary and when you go to that trouble you dont want to forget lol but this is the first time ive not been able to spell so good as ive not needed to for so long, but im frustrated with myself, if anyone could let me know how to use spell check i will use it

This is something that I have to fight every single day. My 11 yr. old son simply will not accept that spelling is important. He just jots something down without taking the time to think about it because, "People should know what I mean."

Most of the time, the less effort one puts into his or her spelling, the more effort everyone else has to put in just to try and get a clue what the heck he or she means.

I also have a sister who is very intelligent, but has severe dyslexia and everyone thinks she’s a stump because she spells like pooh.

What I tell my son is: Nobody is expected to be a perfect speller, but there is no more subtle way to make yourself look unprofessional (and in turn be taken less seriously) than to spell poorly on a regular basis. Try not to look down on people who can’t spell. Just don’t expect everyone to give you credit for what you don’t take the time to look up.

I don’t run a spell checker on here, and occasionally have typos, but I believe that a little boo-boo every now and then is acceptable. In addition, I like to spell out the accent that I speak with. ie: y’all, yer’, yup, a’ight…

However, I like to think that I'm fairly good about taking a moment to look things up if I'm not sure how to spell them.

Writing was developed as a means of communication- a translation of the spoken word. If it does not communicate- if those that see it cannot easily comprehend it's meaning, it has failed. You might just as well jot down a few random symbols!!!

Just sometimes a person comes on whose spelling is beyond comprehension and even the most gentle of requests to "sharpen up" a bit is met with resentment and anger. If I were suddenly to post in German, how long would it be before someone either asked me to post in English, /started ignoring my posts?? (knowing you smarty pants there is a third option which is that someone would translate it for me
yes.gif
)

If it is not recognisable as English, and not comprehensible, surely we have the right to ask if someone could try a little harder??

Shane, what programme are you running- Windows???

On my page the spellcheck is at the top of the page- a tick with ABC above it.

I am a great speller. But I used to have problems and would reverse letters like B and D. I was in specail classes.

I agree 100% - no one should be judging anyone, especially not because of their spelling. Those who are judging people based on something as silly as that are very shallow!

This is a forum for us all to chat about minis and whatever else, not an English textbook!

Believe me I have much sympathy for those who do not have a natural ability to spell and think you are either "wired" for it or not. Some of it I'm sure is a disability but more so it comes down to not wanting to make any extra effort and therein lies the problem. Using myself as an example, I'm not a bad speller but I sometimes don't take time to make it right. The only one I harm by that is myself so I have a situation when I really need to be taken seriously, e.g. writing awards or published documents, I must go over things with a fine toothed comb in order to preserve my professional reputation. My husband is the worst speller on God's green earth but he uses spell check religously, has a handheld electronic dictionary or asks me how to spell something. I have much respect for him wanting to put forth the best writing he can.

Ashley, in the past almost 4 years now that I have been here your spelling has improved more than you suspect and your writing is intelligent and logical. The occasional mispelled word is usually ignored by all but a few if the rest of the message is presented well and you do.

There is a difference between bad spelling and simply not caring. A typo here and there is one thing, everyone does that, it's the mistyping of simple words without bothering to correct them that causes me, right or wrong, to form opinions on the typist.

There's also a time and a place. Here on this forum is one thing, this is a place where the impression you make isn't crucial to your future. Last week at work my boss received a resume, emailed by a student hoping to work at the clinic for the summer. The resume was properly proofed and corrected, but the email in which it was sent was misspelled with no capital letters or punctuation. My boss said that if he'd had a couple more people apply, she wouldn't have even gotten an interview. It's a reflection of professionalism, or lack thereof.

My youngest brother is one of the smartest people I know, but he has a learning disability and spelling has long since been a nemesis of his. He uses spell check and asks someone to proof read his assignments.
