I am currently feeding soaked beet pulp pellets, plus Omelene 400, which has alot of beet pulp in it. Is there such a thing as too much beet pulp?

Yes it is possible to feed too much beet pulp. You need to look at the calcium - phosphorus ratio in your horses diet. Beet pulp is high in calcium. Your Omelene 400 will be balanced. If you are feeding grass hay as well you may need the extra calcium to balance it but that is something that varies from hay to hay. An imbalance can cause problems in bone growth.

I've read that beet pulp should be no more than 40% of the total diet. If you aren't feeding that much, you probably don't need to worry about the Ca:p ratio, but if you are feeding a significant amount...

To balance the calcium in beet pulp you can do one of the following:

1. For each pound of beet pulp, use 2 oz non-calcium added rice bran (2 oz is about 1/4 cup).

2. For each pound of beet pulp, use 1 tsp monosodium phosphate (not very tasty, but such a small amount it should mix in just fine)

3. Or you can use oats: I can't remember how much, but I'm thinking its close to a 1:1 ratio, so that would be 1# oats per 1# beet pulp. [i'm just not sure on this one, as when I was looking to balance for my horses, I was looking for something other than oats, as I have a couple that don't get oats.]
