We've been nursing one of our cats for 2 weeks but she wasn't getting better & it was time to let her go. I brought her into town with me this morning & stopped at the vet clinic on my way to work at 8. The vets don't get in until 9, so I'd arranged to leave her there, then go back & pick up the body at coffee time.
I was feeling very bad about taking her in, especially since she's a very timid cat & I wasn't able to be with her to the last, but this week it's the only way I could do it. The girl that waited on me is one of the newer ones at the clinic, but she has been there several months now--to make this story short, she asked me 3 different times what the cat's name was, then still picked out the wrong chart--didn't notice that until she asked me how old Cindi is (10) and then she wondered why the chart indicated "he" was only 3....she had the chart for "Andy". I would have been okay with that, but what got me was when she asked for the 2nd time what Cindi was there for. I told her right off that Cindi was there to be euthanized....I'm standing there with tears running down my face, and then she asks again what's Cindi coming in for. That was just too much, especially since she was giggling & acting like it was all just a joke that she couldn't get anything right.
I left there crying my eyes out--got to work & sat at my desk trying not to cry for awhile, then called the clinic & fortunately got one of the techs to ask her if she'd make sure that it was Dr. Sherry that did the deed. She assured me she would make sure of that. (I'd planned to request that when I dropped Cindi off, but there was no point asking the girl I dealt with...)
At 9:30 I called back & got that same twit, so I asked for one of the other girls, asked if Cindi was gone (she was, so I said I'd be there shortly to pick her up) then I asked who could I talk to about a staff complaint. She said she'd pass it on, so I told her that I'd never been so badly treated by their clinic as I was this morning--usually their service & compassion is just wonderful. I told her what had happened; I said that I've had to put to sleep quite a number of cats & I normally deal with it not too badly, but I'd been really upset by this girl. If it had been someone who was for the first time ever having to put to sleep a beloved pet, that person would have been devastated to have it handled that way. I said I know this girl is young, but she needs to make the effort to show a little bit of compassion.
I have another cat to take in next week--Poor Lacey is hyperthyroid and getting to be in very poor shape--she's still bright & happy but she's dropping weight drastically & is starting to get a bit weak, so it's time for her too. I'm hoping when I take her in things will go a little bit better. I sure don't need another morning like this one.
