We've been nursing one of our cats for 2 weeks but she wasn't getting better & it was time to let her go. I brought her into town with me this morning & stopped at the vet clinic on my way to work at 8. The vets don't get in until 9, so I'd arranged to leave her there, then go back & pick up the body at coffee time.

I was feeling very bad about taking her in, especially since she's a very timid cat & I wasn't able to be with her to the last, but this week it's the only way I could do it. The girl that waited on me is one of the newer ones at the clinic, but she has been there several months now--to make this story short, she asked me 3 different times what the cat's name was, then still picked out the wrong chart--didn't notice that until she asked me how old Cindi is (10) and then she wondered why the chart indicated "he" was only 3....she had the chart for "Andy". I would have been okay with that, but what got me was when she asked for the 2nd time what Cindi was there for. I told her right off that Cindi was there to be euthanized....I'm standing there with tears running down my face, and then she asks again what's Cindi coming in for. That was just too much, especially since she was giggling & acting like it was all just a joke that she couldn't get anything right.

I left there crying my eyes out--got to work & sat at my desk trying not to cry for awhile, then called the clinic & fortunately got one of the techs to ask her if she'd make sure that it was Dr. Sherry that did the deed. She assured me she would make sure of that. (I'd planned to request that when I dropped Cindi off, but there was no point asking the girl I dealt with...)

At 9:30 I called back & got that same twit, so I asked for one of the other girls, asked if Cindi was gone (she was, so I said I'd be there shortly to pick her up) then I asked who could I talk to about a staff complaint. She said she'd pass it on, so I told her that I'd never been so badly treated by their clinic as I was this morning--usually their service & compassion is just wonderful. I told her what had happened; I said that I've had to put to sleep quite a number of cats & I normally deal with it not too badly, but I'd been really upset by this girl. If it had been someone who was for the first time ever having to put to sleep a beloved pet, that person would have been devastated to have it handled that way. I said I know this girl is young, but she needs to make the effort to show a little bit of compassion.

I have another cat to take in next week--Poor Lacey is hyperthyroid and getting to be in very poor shape--she's still bright & happy but she's dropping weight drastically & is starting to get a bit weak, so it's time for her too. I'm hoping when I take her in things will go a little bit better. I sure don't need another morning like this one.

I'm so sorry about Cindi and sorry you had this experience with the vets' staff. There is no excuse for that young lady to behave like she did.

So sorry for your experience with them. Thank goodness, when I had to euthenize our dog a couple weeks ago (my first experience with this) our vets office was very compassionate, apologetic, and handled Maggie very tenderly. They even allowed me to stay in the room for awhile.

Hopefully this girl will get a strong reprimand and realize that she is dealing with people and very strong feelings. It is sometimes a worse feeling than losing a human loved one because you are the one ending their life.

Awwww that is just not nice!!! I am so sorry you had to go thru something like this while your emotions were racing and your heart was breaking. I know exactly what you are talking about as far as the immaturity of this young lady. We have one of those at our vet's office.

Maybe once someone pulls her over to one side and gives her a crash course on public relations she will realize that she works in a vet's office...where alot of people going in not feeling very good because their pets are sick, and act accordingly. I'm so sorry!

I'm so sorry about Cindi and the way the young lady handled the situation. If she had ever had to take an animal in to have him put to rest I can promise you she would have acted differently. Making the choice to take one of your beloved pets in is a very hard one, even if it is the right one. I commend you in loving your animals enough to know when it is time and I hope someone has a talk with this young lady about her behavior so maybe it will be easier on you next time. (((((((HUGS)))))))

I am so sorry for your loss, that is a hard decision to make, and to have to deal with someone that is not compassionate is not right. I had one of my dogs put to sleep years ago, so hard to do, the vet even sent me a sympathy card after, It was very nice, and showed alot of compassion!!!

Geez. Most of my pets have died at home, but I can vividly recall the few that were put to sleep. It's a traumatic experience to loose a pet in any manner, and to have the office staff giggling and being so airheaded is just absoultely wrong- whee was this girl's professional demeanor?

I hope you get someone else next time- or if you do get this girl, that she treats you and the euthinization with the proper respect. Yikes. I'm sorry about your loss, and your soon to be second loss.

That is so sad that you had to go through that.

I think you did the right thing letting a senior within the clinic know.

Its just not right. We put my 15 year old dog (aka best friend) to sleep this summer. Our clinic books half hour before and half hour after open, ie no other clients will be in the office while you are there with your pet (only for this o course, not regular appts). Our vet cried with me, hugged me, and did everything she could to make her passing dignified. The staff were no less caring. Even when dealing with them on the phone to book the appt. they were nothing but professional, and more importantly compassionate. I think you were right to let the other staff there know, and in fact I don't think you would have been out of line if you had filed a written complaint to the vet about her.

I hope all goes a little easier for you next time, not that it is ever easy.

I'm sorry for your loss.

You have much more patience than me, about the second time she asked me I would have been reaching over the counter for her throat.

My vets know me well and if I have gotten to that point they start asking their employee what the heck they did.
