Here are new pics. of Topper. He is so full of himself. I've never been around a foal that's as courageous as he is. He's going to be a handful. LOL

He will be a week old tomorrow night.

Topper is RHA Lovely Locomotion's full sibling. We sold her a few months ago. She is headed to Germany. It's amazing to me how different they look from one another. She is a bay with a white blaze and very small. This guy appears that he will have a little more height which is fine by me. I like to drive.

I'm really interested in hearing the color opinions. I try and keep up with all the posts about color. Trying to learn.

: His color is the bottom picture. The other two make him look darker. His lashes are light.

I really love this boy. Look at the tiny ears.

His eyes are blue/grey. They will probably change, right?

Kim, he is just SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO precious!!!! I hope I can meet him in person next week!!!

And, I think (know) Kim knows Sorrel and Chestnut are the same, but some people say sorrel where others say chestnut. I think what she is asking is do you think he's sorrel/chestnut or something else

Topper's daddy is silver

Thanks Jill-

The sires color is:

Silver Dapple Minimally Marked Sabino Tobiano/Splash Overo Stallion

I come from the world of quarter horses. I have always "known" there to be a difference between sorrel and chestnut. This is a couple quotes that I found on the internet.

"In the American Quarter Horse, definitions have changed. In the past the AQHA has called sorrel a dark clear red body color with no smuttiness (caused by the Sty smutty gene), and chestnut those horses that are either light clear chestnuts, or those that are obviously smutty, such as muddy chestnuts, liver chestnuts and the like. More recently they have used "sorrel" for light clear yellows and reds, "chestnut" for medium reds, and "liver chestnut" for dark reds. Their current description differs from past ones as the new directive on buckskin vs. dun will change things for those horses of those colors in the future. I have heard that the AQHA seems to have the further distinction that sorrels have lighter colored legs than the body, while chestnuts have legs the same color as the body"

and I found this on the same page:

"Sorrel and chestnut both generally refer to the same color, a reddish coat with non-black points (mane, tail, legs, ears). Chestnut is the English term, while sorrel originated in the west as the cowboy term. Both terms are still in use, with different breed associations referring to the lighter reds differently than the darker reds, but to complicate things different breed associations do not agree as to what term shall cover what shade of color".

I would love for Topper to be a silver bay.

Topper is a real cutie!

: He appears to be Sorrel/Chestnut.....BUT, with his sire being Silver, and since Topper has white eyelashes & those lighter blue/gray eyes, I wouldn't be surprised if his mane starts coming in silvery. If it does...he is a Silver-Chesnut.

I don't see any signs of Topper being a silver bay, personally. Of course, the light "baby hair" on the legs *could* be hiding some darkness of his legs.... but it doesn't look like it, from what the rest of him looks like. The bottom picture looks like his ears are a little bit darker, but that could also be just the way the shadows are in that pic. I vote sorrel/chestnut. Pretty boy!!

Well my vote is going to be silver bay.....I had a filly born last year that was the same color....and I registried her as a silver chestnut.....but I should have clipped her first....after I did it became apparent that her lower legs were a smoking color...and as she matured they have stayed that color. I have had alot of silver bay here and I'm finding it can be hard to see if your not sure what your looking for......so keep us posted I'll bet a dollar he's a silver bay

I vote sorrel/chestnut with silver with a 10-15% chance of silver bay when that foal coat goes. I'm pretty sure he's got silver in there no matter what! LOL.

Mom is gorgeous. I love a good rich bay.

Thank you everyone. I love seeing everyones opinions.

Songcatcher- Please don't feel that you were bothering anyone. I only posted what a confusion it is to me based on what I found on other sites and from other registries.

P.S. I LOVE his mama too.

I was going to sell her, but just couldn't do it. I'm so glad I didn't. She is such a good Mom and she foaled so easy. Nothing seems to phase her. We are thinking about having her trained to drive. I think she would be fun.

I will get more pictures of her later when she sheds out. She is a gorgeous mahagony bay.

before I read your post I was looking at his grey eyes and wondering if there was silver in him! He also has "eyeliner" which "experts" say is a sign of silver if it is present at birth, and if its not and the inner rims are pink then its chestnut. I have a silver dapple mare (without dapples

) who was that same colour when she was a foal. Hope that helps

I honestly do not see any Silver form the pictures you have posted. He looks like a normal Chestnut.
