He was only born on May 1, but since I have to go back to my class tomorrow, he was introduced to the electric early. This is the mares favorite pasture and where they feel most at home. I like to be with them a full day before I leave them unattended back there... but my dad will come every 1.5-2 hours to check on him for a few days.

These are from yesterday-in the front pasture.

I don't know exactly what color this boy is--but I've never had a blue-eyed dorsaled foal!

He is going to be unique, but I've always called his mama a silver dappled, flea-bitten dunskin going gray...

Tucker looks just like his sire in this photo.

Awww! What a sweetie. I love that first picture--I love how a mare might have been in labor the day before, and yet she is ready to run and romp with her new little miracle so that he can experience his first day as a free-running colt.

It'll be interesting to see what color he turns into - looks grulla to me. Or perhaps silver grulla (black + silver + dun).

Karla,

He's adorable

I think he's grullo, maybe to grey with his dam. But that dorsal, I think, proves your speculations that your mare is dun are correct.

His eye color, based on my experience with dun foals, will turn dark. DunIT as a foal, his grulla-grey daughter from last year as a foal, and now his red dun son from this year had / have those same colored eyes.

I know you'll miss him while you're at school today, but it made me smile that your dad's going to look in on him. My dad and I are very close, too.

Here are pics to show you. I think it's the same kind of "blue" you are seeing. On Trooper (red) it's harder to see in pic as his eye's dilated in darker stall and bloodshot from hard delivery but are pretty similar to the other foals, and DunIT as a foal. The only horse eyes I've known to stay "blue" are those born that ice blue of double dilutes and from the pinto gene. Also, the darker color comes in pretty fast, w/in a couple weeks I think.

Hope this helps!

Jill

Dad was a big part of my mare stare team. He lives just two miles away, but this is his busy season as he has an Iris farm. But we talk every morning at 7:30 for updates through mare stare. After spring break, and staying up for 9 nights--I called for the morning chat, and when he said "I'll take good care of them, babe" I just burst out crying. It was so hard to leave her. He watches them for behavior changes...and checks every 90 minutes, but if he saw anything, he'd stay right here. He was reviewed on red bags, breaking sacs, dipping cords. Since he was a cow guy, we talked about how to pull if necessary.

I called last night to ask about checking for one more day, and he was happy to do so. He's a farmer from way back--so I think think he loves to be needed this way. And I sure need him!

Also, now I think I have insight into your gift with plants and flowers!
