When I first saw this mare, I noticed her unique marking on her forehead. Once she got here and settled in, I took this picture of it this morning. Any clue what kind of marking you would call it and if it indicates anything genetically? She DOES NOT have any other markings anywhere on her body - I searched her high and low.

**She did NOT have an injury there, contacted all her previous owners and her breeder reported it was there at birth**

Thanks guys - if anything, it's a pretty cool little marking that I haven't seen often.

I don't know, but my guess would be a sabino caused roan patch (or misplaced star).

My solid stallion has a small roany star similar to that, no other white on him.

Is she by chance a silver bay? She looks to have the same coloring as my little silver bay mare who also carries the sabino gene and has one of these little patches between her ears too! Also happens to have another one just under her stiffle on the medial ridge-can only see it when I am show clipping.

My first thought was sabino as well, but wasn't sure - interesting though!

Yes, she is a solid (other than this marking) silver bay. She is a proven broodmare and she foaled out several pintos and had a beautiful 2010 buckskin filly with no silver on any foals yet so we know she's heterozygous for silver.

It looks like ticking, maybe a roan in her pedigree.
I looked through her pedigree - no "known recorded" roans in her pedigree but we all know how that goes!!

She does, however have several pintos in her pedigree.

I wonder if it could have anything to do with the silver gene??? I have a solid silver bay colt here who doesn't have any roan in his background either, or sabino, and he has a patch in almost the same spot and another tiny one in his bridle path. They aren't scars either.

I've seen this often on Sabino horses.....even "solid" ones. Sabino doesn't always mean pinto. It can show as little as a patch of roaning.

I have a solid bay thoroughbred mare with the same thing. Thoroughbred registry just counts it as a faint star. My mare is out of a bay stud and a bay mare. Her granddaddy was a grey but other than that it is bays as far back as the records show.

My mare has a mark on her head that only shows when her hair isn't clipped. The photo of her as a baby showed it so they registered as having a star. You see; you decide.

Very interesting Sandee!!!

I've seen her clipped and in natural coat and hers is visible in both stages of hair growth -- I have no clue what it is LOL
