Here's the symptons of my very sick computer named LaTush. I name everything.....

Since it will be two more days until I can take it in to my computer man I thought I might see if anyone had any ideas here.

It won't load. When I boot up, it begins to start up and then it all goes dead into a completely black screen and says no signal. The dsl boxy thingy light also indicated no signal. I have to keep turning it on and off about 2 dozen times for an hour or more. I keep calling down to the dsl people and internet service and its not them of course. Sometimes it trys to load and then I can get all the way into my main page and everything is distorted and then it suddenly goes to black screen again and shuts down. After I struggle with it, then it will come on normally and then my dsl boxy thingy light comes on and its all good until the next time I boot up then it starts all over again. Today it took me a full two hours to get online. This is not good for my mental well being nor my marriage.

My computer man suggested that I clean it especially since we did some remodeling and I falied to cover it up. Sure enough, we cleaned it out really good as it was bad nasty inside and I still can't hear the fan thingy running like it usually does. But it still is doing this whole thing upon start up.

All my virus protectors are ok and says they are on and I don't have a problem that way.

If anyone has any ideas I'd appreciate it.

Thank you.

It doesnt sound likeyou computer it sounds like your interent. I would clean out or delete tempfiles and cookies to see if that does help but it sounds like internet to me. Im no computer expert either so I could be way off

Sometimes restore your computer back to a day it was not doing this.

and once you are on disk defragmenter it. will also help. should be done once a month

go to start than all programs - accessories - system tools and you will find

Restore and disk defragmenter..

Hope this helps might be a little different

so can do search for either of these.

It still could be a virus that your protector is not picking up. Sounds a lot like the one Ruby got on my laptap thanks to Facebook. It was a really bad one and I had to have my SIL fix it. Mine would boot up and load and then crash. The reason why is because everytime I booted up it went to sending thousands of spam emails. So immediately my IP would shut me down.

You mention 2 issues: the DSL thingy and the computer.

Does the computer work when NOT attached to the network?

Does the computer go through this no-boot drama and then work after a few pokes with a stick? (You do not make it clear if it's actually usable with enough patience, or if it's not usable at all) Once you get it running, will it work for a time then fall over with no warning?

Are the DSL thingy and the computer plugged into the same outlet/power strip/surger protector?

I have 2 initial guesses, but they're really just stabs in the dark:

1) Your PSU/power strip/wall socket/ is going bad

2) One of the components in your computer (most likely CPU or motherboard) is overheating, and the DSL issue is unrelated. Although it's possible fine renovation dust got into the DSL thingy and is causing similar physical problems.

I would bet money on #2, if I were forced to guess right now.

My two cents worth, since you can't hear the fan thingy running and have had dust from renovations, I would suggest taking it to best buy, Geek Squade, or some other computer place, and have it cleaned, it only takes about 15 minutes. Then if that doesn't work try the go back like someone else suggested. Last year mine was acting up becuase we use wood stoves during the winter and they are dusty, the fan got clogged, once it was uncloged it works fine, for now, knock on wood. All I can say is stupid machines, the're like husbands, can't live with them and can't live without them. I love them both. Only problem is I need to replace my computer every few years and my hubby well he's been with me for almost 40 years. Can't replace a good man. Good luck with your computer problem.

Wow you guys are so smart! Thanks so much for all these ideas.

So here's what was wrong. The internet service after all, duh. Seems that during a storm a few days ago something was knocked out and the signals have been messed up. They gave me a zap from the office for my boxy thingy and everything seems fine now.

Just in case we are still going to visit my computer man for a really good cleaning and a little check up anyhow. Thanks again.

Sometimes adjusting the tiny screws in the back with a very large mallet works.

That is too funny, I don't have a mallet, but I have a golf club will it work as well? I got on this morning and kept getting error messages! Crazy machines!
