What do you do for a horse w/ allergies-hayfever

Hi all,

My new stallion has hayfever. . . the pollen is really getting to him. . .goopy eyes for several weeks. Vet checked fine "He has allergies". Gave me some ointment for eyes, but wondered if there was something else I could do also.

My boy went through this with his eyes. After several tubes of goopy ointment, I took him to an equine ophthamologist. I started using Opcon-A (Bausch and Lomb) and his eyes began to improve. Now I use it ocassionally. It's something to try.

There's an equine antihistamine called "TriHist" or "EquiHist" which can be helpful. My 33 year old Arab has been on it for years for itching and my older mini gelding uses it from March to September to keep his cedar allergies down. Neither of them shows any side effects from it but it did make my yearling sleepy when I gave him some for hives last week. It helps a lot though!

My vet recommends NOT using Tri Hist on pg mares. It can cause abortions.

I forgot to add that I also used banamine for my boy when his eye swelled shut before I started using the Opcon drops.

He also injured his eye, I think, because of rubbing it from the itch and swelling. I tried cortizone ointments and antibacterial drops/ointments per the vet on him and nothing cleared it up. That is why I took him to the opthamalogist.

She said if the Opcon A didnt' work, she would prescribe something. But so far I've had good results. It has a decongestant in it besides the antihistimine. I keep it in the barn and if I notice anything with his eyes, I use the drops.

We have a small 30 inch gelding that has allergies in the Fall, we just give him benedryl thru the worst of it. I usually put 2 tsp of the liquid children's in his food morning and night. It seemed to help.

Vetri-cine is n immune booster ( all natural) that has been very helpful for horses with allergies. It boosta their immune system, and has been proven to help with auto immune issues. It is manufactured by Vetri- Science Labs, your vet can get it or you can order it directly. I used in in a show barn with more than 30 horses in it, that traveled all over the country, we very seldom had any sick issues.

We had a stallion with allergies. I used an rx steroid drop in the eyes and irrigated them with saline. The vet also had us use equihist and predisone.

One thing I read about that seemed to work was honey made within 5 miles of your property to boost immunity. That helped too. And he loved it.
