Silver only shows on black, it can hide in red and be passed on. It affects the entire body not just the points. Lily was registered as a palomino foal, and indeed she looked like a creamy palomino. Her dam is sorrel/chestnut (liver) and her sire is a sooty buckskin with a lot of silver in the pedigree.
Here she is in fall, summer, and spring. She is EE homozygous black so the silver was passed on.
Just wanted to add that what I found the most fascinating with the way silver acts seasonally, is Lily's mane and tail also changed getting more yellow/flaxen in fall and winter, changing to white/flaxen with definite silver roots in spring and summer. I have scratched my head wondering about how that occurs.
