My friend got her registration papers for her filly and they (AMHA) asked if she wanted Parentage Qualified Registration Certificate. Can anyone explain this for me.
Just a bit of further clarification - Parent qualified means that the offspring, sire, and dam have been DNA tested, and the results verified to make sure that foal is out of those 2 horses.
If I have a horse who has been DNA'd and both it's sire and dam have also been DNA'd, I send the papers to AMHA and tell them to PQ the horse. I have never been charged for this. I honestly think it should be done automatically! Period.
I just sent in another paper today to AMHA to have the horse transferred into my name (little late getting around to it) and I put a note on the papers to PQ the horse.
It used to be that when you DNA'd your horse if the sire and dam had been DNA'd they would Parentage Qualify automatically. Now you have to check the box on the form in order for that to happen.
I agree that I think it should be automatically done. It proves that the pedigree is legitamite. There is no extra chage for this, just the standard cost fo rthe horses to be DNA'd.
If the foal is DNA at the time of the original registration, it should be automatically PQ'd. There is no additional charge to PQ the animal.
I would like to see everyone start asking sellers for the horses to be PQ'd where possible. I often have to ask for papers be mailed before the DNA results come back. (so I can show the foal) They then mail out a letter stating the PQ has been done. I usually wait for the blue papers until I need to send the papers in again for transfer or mature papers.
If for some reason the foal does not PQ you can request that they try again using a different stallion. I had a colt get through two fences and the foal was his. There should not be a charge to try PQing to the second stallion when this occurs.
