Well I'm new here, and I'm sure I could add to the list but I will sound redundant!
I am curious about the rope halters though. Why should horses not be tied in them? I use them for training, but I do tie lightly in them (I never leave a horse alone tied, and I always loose-tie because I hate for stuff to get broken 

...).

I do tie with mine and have had no problems, but some on the board know of instances of horses with permanent facial paralysis due to the rope severely pinching a nerve when they have pulled back hard. I'm sure there are other reasons for not tying with the rope halters, but this is the one I've heard.

Thanks Chandra. Yikes...it's one of "those things" that it sure won't hurt to simply take the precaution, isn't it? I do have one puller, but like I said I tie loose and on 12 feet lines and I'm only a step or two away. When he starts to pull, the long lead starts to move and I just snatch it before he gets very far (he usually stops anyway, because there is no resistence as he pulls).

But I'll certainly think next time, before I tie with a rope halter. Thanks again.

Waayyy too many things to list

, But the main ones are:

-Everyone has there own opinion, respect what everyone says (even if you dont agree with it). I have always thought that way, but I really have to use it on this forum.

-Always ask questions, even if I think it is silly. Someone else probably has the same one that they would like answered, but hasnt had the time or courage to ask.

This forum is SO informative and I find it like a calculator..it always knows the answer....Here, there is always someone who has gone through the same thing or has used the same product. It is very rare to have a question un-answered.

Well, I for one am very thankful that people are willing to discuss health related topics. I always call my vet when I have a question, but last year, all three vets were out on farm calls and for the first time in my life I saw what turned out to be a fainter. I was totally beside myself. I didn't know whether to just grab the foal and meet the vets or wait for them or just what to do. Real quick I popped on here and asked a question if anyone had ever seen this. They told me about fainters and guess what, not one of the 3 vets had ever heard of it. Had we not suspected a fainter, I would probably have been out thousands of dollars for a condition that cleared up in a short few days. Had I not known that others had experienced it and the vets not known it happens, we would have been in a scary spot had it not been for the forum.

To me, when people offer up the stories of what happened to them and how the vet treated it, it's very beneficial. You still need a vet, but in some cases, a vet may not be entirely up on minis or even horses in general. At least if someone has mentioned what worked in their scenario then you have something to take to the vet to consider.

It really is no diferent than someone telling me they were having a bad headache and I said Tylenol works great. The person with the headache still has to make the final decission to buy and take that medicine. If they choose to take it without consulting their doctor and find out it carries a relative of a drug they are allergic to, then that was their doing to make an uneducated choice. All I did was say it worked for me and let them know that option exists.

Thanks to all who are willing to share your hands on experiences. I am sure in many cases it was you guys and not the vets who ultimately helped save a horses life!!!!! (no disrespect intended Dr. Pam

I cant even begin to put in one reply what we have learned from this forum from all the information regarding foaling and pregnant mares to how to set up a show horse. From direction to valuable books that broaden my knowledge base to information that helps my big horse vets learn more and more about minis everyday. My vet asks what the mini people have to say often as they have always been equine specialists but only recently within the last 5 years have been treating minis on a regular basis so my vet always asks about the concensus of the forum about various things. Information regarding dwarfs and how to recognize them and how to care for them. Information on color genetics and what to expect. More importantly there is always a listening ear here even when my vet service is an hour away. Its where I come during that fearful time when something seems wrong and the vet is on his way.

And it has saved the lives of many of my horses even ones in the care of a vet. Thank fully my vet has listened to what I have heard on here and acted upon it.

We've had the SAME thing happen with OUR vet! We were able to present some ideas we got off the forum to him and he was willing to check them out!
