Okay, so I'm a member of another forum. I was posting about my boy Pete's growth spurt/high butt. Well, one of our members who is pretty educated about dwarfism (the genetics) commented saying that my boy could be a dwarf. I was in awe. My boy, Pete, is 29-30'' at the shoulder and he's 8 month old. His butt, on the other hand is 33-34'' tall. His cannons support the fact that he'll mature to be 33-34'' tall. We've previously discussed the fact that he went through a growth spurt in June/July, and is butt high from it. I think we've (us on here, the forum) had decided that he'd grow and still be a little butt high still after he matures. But dwarf?

I'm honestly not seeing it.

Here's some pictures of him-

So, this is Pete in May, slightly butt high:

In July, right after a growth spurt in June:

Are you guys seeing anything? Or am I just blind? Another member (who doesn't exactly like me) poked in and said this:

Dwarfism does not only show in height. There are other characteristics there too. Ruling him out as not being a dwarf just because he is bigger makes no sense.
I've had dwarves before. More than a few to the point of embarrassment. I know what a dwarf looks like. To me, it would never cross my mind that he would be one. Carrier? Sure, along with 90% (I'm throwing that out of my butt) of the rest of the miniature horse population.

Please tell me what you guys think, as fellow miniature horse breeders and owners. Dwarf? Or just a colt who went through a growth spurt and is SLOWLY leveling out (at 33-34'' tall?

NO WAY is your colt a dwarf...at least NOTHING in these photos would indicate so!!!
Thanks. I think she actually meant like carrier exhibiting dwarf characteristics.

But, I guess to me, when you have a colt who in June/July shoots up a couple inches in the back and has ancestors who are 33-35'' tall, I woudl assume that he would be okay. Especially if his cannon measurements predict him to grow to 33-34'' tall.

I dont see dwarf at all. Some issues such as butt high that might not ever come down but that doesnt mean dwarf.

Heh, I don't expect the butt to come down, (or shoulders go up). He's not going to be perfect and I expect him to be slightly butt high even when he's done growing.

i do not see any dwarf issues- I do think he is very downhill and appears to have been that way even in the first photo of him but that is not a dwarf thing.

No horse is perfect I have a gelding who is downhill a bit

I don't know if your friend is that knowledgeable about mini's or dwarfs even for that matter. there is nothing in those pictures that indicates dwarf.

Is he a carrier, who the heck knows till we get a test that is comprehensive from the folks that are working on that like John Eberth.

As far as the high butt, don't worry about it they all go thru that at one point of another and most grow out of it.

I agree, I do not think he looks like a dwarf either.

Lots of horses this time of year look "dwarfy", it is just the way their hair grows, but come spring when they shed, they are gorgeous!

I don't see it either. Perhaps the person was seeing the awkward stage in July when everything seemed out of whack with your cute little guy (love that baby stage of growth)

. His head and expression in that July photo could have given the person a little idea of a dwarfy-look but the rest of him doesn't look dwarfy.

Since he's going to be a gelding it's not a worry, either! He's adorable!

I dont see dwarf at all either! Perhaps the person who commented that needs a bit more education on dwarfism.

As others have mentioned, based on the photos posted, there are no dwarf characteristics that are expressed.

I don't wonder, though, that since his sire is a known dwarf thrower, that maybe it was meant that your colt is showing small dwarfism traits? Going to be the odd man out, here, but IMO, and strictly IMO, according to the pics you posted, he's not butt high and going through a growth spurt- I almost think he's roach backed. Why I think that is that there are NO pics showing him ever caught up at any point. From the pics posted, I don't see anything other than that that leaps out at me, but even being roach backed is not neccesarily a sign of dwarfism so much as just bad conformation.

Who knows, though, just from pics. Enjoy him for what he is!
