What is a Fire Sale?

Can someone please educate me! I've received several e-mail messages promoting fire sales! The prices are not low, What the heck is a fire sale? Maybe I should be posting on the mini forum, just not sure. any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

According to Wikipedia: A fire sale is the sale of goods at extremely discounted prices, typically when the seller faces bankruptcy or other impending distress. The term may originally have been based on the sale of goods at a heavy discount due to fire damage. A fire sale may or may not be a closeout, the final sale of goods to zero inventory

 

 

I've never heard of it before.

I guess I'm just behind the times! Back in the day a fire sale at a store meant that damaged goods were being sold at rock bottom prices, or a going out of business sale. I've never heard of it before pertaining to horse sales. Now I've received several e-mail messages for equine fire sales, so I don't think someone would advertise to sell damaged horses--doesn't make any sense too. I'm now thinking it is a play on words that has a different meaning altogether.

I always thought it meant that someone needs to raise a lot of cash really fast and will drop prices really low to sell quickly.

I've seen in on the sales board many times in reference to having to make room for new foals or new horses purchased or having to pay a big vet bill or doctor bill in a hurry.

I just thought it meant that you lost (were laid off or fired) your job and had to downside or disperse quickly.

Glad you asked because I too have been curious. I am thinking about having a drought, burn ban, economy is upside-down, no cost of living raise, just want to retire in comfort sale.
