We are reading a great book in English. Its called 'Tuesdays with Morrie'.

Its about this old man who got dianosed with ALS (nerve disease which attacks you from your feet up and kills the nerves, eventually you die ..no cure). Well he is College professor (sociology) and he decided that his death is going to be his last project. So far we are on page 52 and every page is something about life. Really gets you to thinking what the Meaning of life is. That is our assignment for this book, what the meaning of life is to us.

**What is your meaning of life? I'm just nosey

Here is mine.

To me, the meaning of life is to enjoy what you have, even as you wish for more. Everyday try something new and do something that will influence a persons life or change it. Make your life about changing others, that will change your own life. Keep family in your thoughts and god in your heart. Have fun, but make time for the simple things in life that are taken advantage of and be strong through it all, even if at first your not.

My mother bought me this book because her mom (my grandma) had ALS. A very hard disease to come to terms with. She was a person who never said a bad word about anyone! A real sweetheart. I think if everyone could model their lives like that the world would be a much better place.

I believe we are here to learn and help others.

Very good reading and I too believe we are here on earth to learn and without learning life can loose meaning. I am sure there are many opinions as to the what is the meaning of life but as long as there is some meaning it sure is worth living. Mary

I got the book on tape a few years ago. We listened to it coming home from a horse show from Albaquerque (sp?) back to Phoenix. We all really enjoyed it. Something everyone should read or listen to.

I applaud you for taking the time to "look outside your own circle" so to speak, and go in search of meaning by considering others' experiences in life as you do so.

This is probably the "meaning of life" exactly. To enjoy your life, and to find greater enjoyment through sharing with others, helping others where possible, of course avoiding causing unhappiness and pain as well, though that is not always the way it goes.

Guess what I mean is do the best you can, do what you love and do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Kinda how I live my life.

I am not a religious person, and so I feel there is a greater scope for the "meaning" of our lives, at least that's how I see it. Most religions to me tend to be very limiting, on many levels, and I don't see that being good for the human race as a whole.

Lisa of Ruff N Tuff Minis had a quote in her sig a while back, and I copied it and sent it to my dad, and I can't remember it, but it was about having your eyes opened by wonder, not closed, and it is very apt. I will have to find it again, or maybe Lisa will see this and fix me up.

There is so much wonder in the world, it does not take a belief in one all powerful god to foster that sense of wonder, nor to have a deep respect for life of all forms, and the spirits within.

I did not mean to turn this into a debate of religions or lack of, but it goes hand in hand with the meaning of life to me.

I guess what I dislike so much is that yes, we have racial bias, and all types of bigotry, but so much evil has been wrought in the name of religions, and there is very much discrimination in the world if one "does not believe like I do".

It's painful to me that so many people are guided around by their noses by religious organizations, and bilked of their financial means, etc. etc. all in the name of a greater good. Yes, religious organizations do good, also, but they also are used to take advantage of people who have a need for spiritual guidance. Seems criminal to me.

I can't see disliking a person for the god they believe in, nor can I see hating someone because they are a different color or outward appearance. I choose my friends, which also become my family, as barnbum mentioned in her post, based on the hearts within. Not the one prone to disease or age, but the one that lives forever in the hearts they touched.

I have many many wonderful friends and family in that respect, though a very tiny "blood" family.

I guess at 37, I am not qualified to give a meaning of life speech, really, as I am still young, or sort of, but I like to think I am doing the right thing...?

There is a whole lot of truth in what you say about some religions. Too many religions do teach prejudice even though they say they don't. This is one of the reasons I say we are here to learn while on earth...learn what is best for all people. Too often religions create closed minds and that is not what the meaning of life is about. If we aren't brain washed, our minds are open to learning what is right and what is wrong. Anyway, you make some very good points. Mary

Leeana,

I applaud your personal meaning of life......

For me, this life is a school of learning and growing spiritually.....trying to improve always by doing what is best for all beings around me. Sometimes it's a test! But I hope in the end when I look back at my life I won't be too ashamed of myself.

A small child looking at a fallen leaf........

Asking "why is the sky blue?"

Seeing the ocean for the first time......

Gazing at a mountain

the absolute perfection of new fallen snow

A babies first breath

The wonder of it all.........................

A very wise man once said, "Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man."

When I was still an ER nurse I had a very demented little lady who couldn't remember her name or anything longer than about 30 seconds. She clearly and with purpose told me the meaning of life which I remember to this day. She said "The meaning of life is to keep your mouth shut and your bowels open."

Who am I to argue with those words of wisdom........

Personally, I think people place too much importance on finding the meaning of life, or just "finding themselves."

We're mammals, people, just like the rest of the animals out there. We were put on this earth to be born, mature, reproduce, grow old, and die - just like every other creature out there.

Of course, I'm going to kick @ss while I'm here, but I'm not going to waste precious time trying to figure out WHY I'm here. I just am. I will always strive to better myself, but in the end, I'm no different than a moose or dolphin or mouse.

Gee Jenn you say that so well and to the point.

Well, you certainly have your right to believe that ladies, but it is so sad for me to read. What kind of a purpose is that? No wonder people commit suicide. I am so thankful I know there is a lot more to life than that and that I am a special creation of God. Again, go ahead and believe it if you want to; I'm not saying you have to change to what I'm saying at all.

The meaning of life for me is to know Christ, have fellowship with Him and to make Him and His love known to others as more than just the baby in the manger. As the Savior.
