Well as I posted a few days ago I experienced the loss of my first foal...awful! Well I would love to have a foal to raise, halter break, watch run in the pasture...My thought was to find a broodmare that needs to be retired that is NOT in foal but currently has a foal by her side. Since I have no desire to foal out a miniature ever again I thought this my work and since I currently only have 1 mini(my mare that lost her foal who is retired from breeding now) that this would also give my mini mare mini company.(I do have a Paint mare but they are not together. Right now it is just a thought, am I rushing things or should I wait longer? What have others done to fill this void with the loss of a foal? Any and all input would be appreciated!

First I'm so very sorry for your loss. My fear of what you are going through is why I will probably never breed my girls. I think your idea of getting a mare and foal is great. Or even just a weanling if you run on to one. Go for it!!

If you aren't going to show, and don't need papers to be happy, try rescues or animal shelters in your area. Post an add on Craigs List, go to local livestock auctions, let your wishes be known and keep your feelers out. I know in my area there are always minis for sale or free if you look hard enough. Don't let the bad keep you down, there is nothing as satisfying as making life better for a new animal. Happiness is just around the corner. Best of luck!

I am so sorry for your loss. I know the heartbreaking feeling myself. If I were in your position, I would look for a nice foal that you could get as a weanling. I think you will find the greatest selection when shopping for foals - that is what we found anyway. The minis that we got as weanlings all have special places in our hearts, as we did all their training. If you find one nearby, you could start bonding right away.. Or you could get 2 weanlings instead of a mare and foal.

So sorry for your loss! When my mare lost her foal, I got a mare with a foal at her side that looked exactly like the one I lost. He is 4 this year, and we have such a special bond, he'll jump up into the truck, and he still lays down in my lap.

..... and this is how mini's become like potato chips...

Each individual is different and we each handle grief in so many different ways. With that being said YOU should do whatever is needed for YOU to overcome this anguish and heartache that your feeling.

I think that you already know what you want to do....

I have several ideas of what I would like to do but don't want to recklessly jump into something. I figured with all the mini people on this board someone may have ideas/suggestions that I at this time am not thinking of.
