I am taking a nice little trip over to country springs tommarow hopefully to get some feed. I was talking to Kay about feedng the other day and i was thinking about switching feed for Lexus & Angel.

Okay Lexus is a 5 month old paint filly

and

Angel is a 7yr old mare 2 month in foal.

I want something to feed both of them and Angels foal when it is born ...but i dont know which would be better. I dont really want to bother with buying two different types of feed because when im not home i know someone will mess it up when they feed them.

So Equine Junior

.....or

Equine Mare&Foal

Or is there a feed that would be better then this, that i would be able to find at Country Springs? I really dont want to order something from france ...

We've used both and have had good luck with both. However, both are meant for different things.

Tough choice. Mare and foal I guess if I absolutely had to choose just one.

I think that Angel could be on a regular horse ration until about 3 months before foaling then I would put her on an increased amount of the regular feed till a month before and THEN on mare and foal until the foal is ready to wean or grows too fast before that. THe yearling filly should be on a Jr feed because she is so lanky. Large horse maintainance is a bit different than minis.I dont treat my broondmares differently this early in a pregnancy. They dont have an increase in their nutritional needs till the 3rd trimester when the foal puts on the most wt. Thats just what I do here.

I agree with Lyn, that a pregnant mare does not have special / increased nutritional needs until the last trimester.

Is Mare & Foal a complete feed? I'm thinking it is not.

I am using Purina Equine Junior for DunIT, who is 10mos old and doing fabulous on it so far. It has easy to digest roughage and is formulated for growing foals. I really feel it is safer than a sweet feed. DunIT gets the Purina Equine Junior morning and night. He gest a handful of hay in the morning to go with it, and then he also gets maybe 1/4 a flake at night since most of his food, the base of his diet, is the Purina Equine Junior which is designed to be used as the sole food source for a horse if you so desire (but you can feed hay, too).

The way I figured it when deciding how to change my feed program, that by using complete feeds (age appropriate ones) as the foundation of my program, and feeding a minimal amount of hay, I can't go but so wrong since the folks at Purina have been feeding horses longer than I have been.

Okay Thanks

I will pick up some Equine Junior tommarow for Lexus, i wont worry about Angel then for a couple month's.

Thanks agian

well you know how i feel. im a huge believer in equine jr. to me its much better then mare and foal feed and can be fed to both the dam (her last trimester and while the foal is nursing) and the foal. In keeping with the KISS method of feeding LOL.

Is the Equine Junior you are speaking of a Purina feed. I have the particulars (write ups) for the Equine Juvenile Development Chow and the write up for Omolene 300.

The juvenile one states that it is high fibre, multi-particle feed containing Athlete specifically designed for weanlings and yearlings to help improve and control growth rate. (14.5%)

Omolene 300 is a premium quality feed formulated to provide the specific nutritional balance required to meet the demands of both the lactating mare and foal. (16.0 %)

I have the complete sheet that gives all the features and benefits as well as the guaranteed analysis, and feeding directions for both. f anyone would like a copy I would be happy to scan and send it. Have a blessed night.
