Have been trying to find a Nursery in say, Caroline, Spots,Essex, King George counties, that sells Leyland Cypress.

And hoping the pricing will be like "Means Nursery" in Scappoose Oregon.(I know most likely a pipe dream)

Having no luck at all... checking online.

So any VA folks that like Gardening,,, know of any Nurseries with good prices...and have things like, Leyland Cypress and so on?

I'm not in Va but here on the Delmarva Peninsula (DE,MD&VA) Leland Cypress are everywhere. Our local bargain shopper mag.(THE GUIDE) has ads every week for them.Price depends on size. They grow really well here in DE and Eastern shore MD.They grow so fast and provide a great privacy screen or windbreak.Let me know if you can't find any in your area&I'll see what I can do.Vanity Grove Farms- Buster and Donna Gough live in Amelia,VA near Richmond and are very nice people.Look up their web site and contact them-they might be able to help you.Just tell them Bev from Knollac Farm in DE send you.Good luck and happy planting

Thanks!

That's what I need them for. Road is pretty busy and not used to the noise.

Will check out that farm and see what they have. VBG

Buster and Donna don't sell shrubery but I am sure they will know who does sell Leyland Cypress in your area. They are very nice people and will be a great Mini contact for someone new to the area.Sorry if I misled you. I love those trees -they grow so fast and are beautiful

No problem Bev, it happens.

Most likely, will have to buy them online. As VA is not blessed with the kind and number of nurseries as Oregon has.

Please call Buster and Donna. They are such nice people and have a business-plumbing I think so they know lots of people in the area. They are very active showing Minis and do some driving. They will be a very good contact for a newcomer in the area.Hope you find your cypress. They are so beautiful and functional

Shari,

If you are looking for something similar to Means, I'd talk to local landscapers and see who they order from. That is Means' primary market -- what they sell to the public is just their overstock.

Also, for planting your privacy/sound barrier, don't plant in a straight line. Plant instead in an offset or zigzag pattern. This way you can plant at the recommended distance from shrub to shrub, but they will block out the road sooner without being overcrowded when mature.

Do you ever check out the GardenWeb Forums?

Is what I did at the Highland rd Farm.

I have been on that forum but not for Leylands. Have been asking around at the Homesteading/Gardening forums and no luck so far.

Seems like most people around here order them from Lowes of all places.

Found a place in NC that has, Thuja green giants, Leylands and Leyland Murrays. Tree's are only about a foot tall but they grow fast and the men of the house will not have to dig big holes.

Seems like the only thing one can find in this part of VA is grain farmers and hunters.

No nurseries, no sheep.... tons of trash on the sides of the roads. Oh and the dog's every where.

Not something I am used too.

Hard to wait... to get the next stage of the fencing done, so I can keep the dogs out before one of my animals get hurt.

People so far, seem to be fairly nice, weather has been pretty good..

Just an FYI, if you care to travel the distance come spring/summer there are some awesome plant auctions in the Leola, pa area. Wonderful prices, but you typically have to buy the lot, which may be ten, twenty, a row, what ever, it varies. We got arborvitae last spring, about thirty or so, they were about twenty four ish inches, just the plant, not counting the rooted container, and they were about $2.50 each. Huge savings over the greenhouses and local lowes and home depot garden centers. This is where many of the nurseries bring their shrubbery and plants. Come June they have georgous hanging baskets of flowers, usually go for $3-$10 each, but they are the same thing the local greenhouse sells for $35-$40.

.

Ooh-ooh-ooh -- speaking of North Carolina...

Are you familiar with Plant Delights Nursery? Even if you never buy a thing, owner Tony Avent is hysterically funny (just look at the names of hostas he's developed). They specialize in unusual plants, so are likely not the place for your current search, but sign up for their catalog or check their website www.plantdelights.com/ for some fun reading.

Lowe's is based somewhere in the south.Very big on the east coast. That may be a good source for you.Go see the manager and maybe you can make a deal.

Oh my husband would hate me if I went to a plant auction! LOL

Will check that out Susanne, Thank you!

Had someone else tell me Lowes will order trees. Will have to check that out too.
