I've decided I don't want to wait to know. And I don't really want to pay a vet to come out to test 5 mares because it could cost twice as much as buying the test kits and doing them "myself"

So anyone out there in Maine/NH want to come draw blood and help me? I bet we could get a group together and make it a PARTY! lol

Any phlebotomists out there?

My vet charge me a call $45 and then $3 a head to draw blood. I didn't think that was bad. Unfortunately the test said only one out of the three was pregnant. Wish you would give a due date

I just called and my vet would charge $20 per horse plus the farm call, which is $50.

My first choice would be ultrasounding, but the only vet in our area that has a machine, refuses to bring it out to anyone's farm, so the mares have to be transported to her. I refuse to haul possibly (hopefully!

) pregnant mares 40 minutes down bumpy country roads to her clinic, and at $40. a horse!

Ooo that's a tough one. Wish you had access to my sweetheart of a vet. He does it for no charge w/a farm call, which is about $25, so as many as ya want w/that call. He has threatened to teach me to do these things, but don't you need a vacu-tainer or whatever those are, to have on hand for the collection?

My vet is always relieved when he gets here and the horse that needs collected is clipped (usually only a winter thing) b/c finding the right spot is easier if there isn't a bunch of long hair over the site.

Good luck!

Absolutely!! :new_shocked:

All I need is a return ticket from New Zealand, and a suitcase large enough to fit a dozen nice horses in!

Woo. Take the Vet route we Tried doing it ourselves last year with the pregnancy tests and Ended up just Getting the vet out we did 5 mare Too i believe. Get him to do it next time you Need him out any horses due for shots soon? :bgrin

LOL tracy... maybe i can get mom to do it for you if you get everything ready. She's not as slick as the vets since she does people mostly and has only done it on horses a few times ..hehe She did manage to get blood though for Jen and I. i guess people are much easier. All i can say is mini's are HARD to do. I tried and barely got any blood when i did it. it's much more difficult than the big horses that i've done... it's almost like they have muscles closer to the vein and more fat over them. I can ask her though if your serious about doing it. I need to get one and test mink too.

Nookta, you don't nessesarily need a vaccutainer. What color do you normally use? If its a "red-top" then you can easily replace that with a syringe. Probably easier since you don't have to worry about loosing the vacuum.

Depending on what state you live in and how much blood you need you may be able to purchase a 3cc (or larger if you need it) syringe at your local tack shop. If you do a lot of them you can always buy a flat of vaccutainers from the supply houses, I don't think they are controlled in any way. They cost around $25 for 50 I think... but its been a while since I priced them

I don't want to use the vet for this. I'd rather pay them $30 to palpate each one rather than do the blood test at $25 for the test and $20 for them to pull blood. (Our vet is tiny and palpating is very safe.)

What is the point of the Foal Proof Test if it isn't to let you do it yourself?

Perhaps some of you could get together in the region and purchase a Preg Test by Animark and you could test all the mares you want whenever you want. Write me if you want information.

You are asking for someone to practice veterinary medicine without a license. It is not a good thing to do especially on a public forum.

Actually you dont need to be a vet to draw blood, I am in school to become a vet tech but I have been drawing blood as an assistant, and have done so on my own horses for blood tests, rather than hauling them to the vet, getting them stressed out and then hauling them back.

I can see your point though! and If it was something else like teeth, I would agree and say that it would be a bit unethical.

Not all vets are good at pulling blood. Had mine out yesterday and needed blood pulled on 4 minis, two of which were Dwarfs. She got the first two ok but then she came to my first Dwarf Honey. She tried everything and after 10 minutes of muttering, shaking her head and saying "She has no neck", She has no neck", "she HAS NO NECK"!! LOL She gave up. Same thing with Jazz my 2nd Dwarf. Looks like they will be crossing the TN without a Coggins. I realize this is not exactly on track for this post, but what the heck!!!!

I've got two FoolProof tests here and am leery about doing them myself.

Actually it is considered veterinary medicine. Its an invasive procedure. Vet techs are licensed by the state (where applicable) or are covered under their vet's license. I'm covered under CSU's insurance as a veterinarian, even though I don't have near the training real vets do

I still would like to know what these tests test for. There are very few markers that are actually reliable for pregnancy.

Yes it is Veterinary medicine, but you dont have to be a licensced, veterinarian, technician or anything to draw blood, maybe the rules are different in Canada than the US? I too would be interested in what tests are being done as well as I have not heard of one that works either.

Edited to add: That doesnt mean I can go around taking blood from horses, and charging people a minimum fee for it. But If I have a friend that needs blood from her animal, or I need blood from one of mine, its not illegal to do so.

Rather, its not legal. If something goes wrong, you are liable for malpractice (and those lawsuits run in the millions). Now, if you are doing your own horses, sure, you can do whatever you want, including ultrasound and rectal palpation. But you can't do that on someone elses mares (except in Texas, where you can but can't charge for it). I'd draw blood from a friend's horse in a heartbeat, I give my own injections and everything. But I won't do that for someone I don't know, and even doing it for friends carries a huge risk to it.
