I believe it is never wasted if a person is standing up For their values and Against things they believe to be wrong.

And I also mean voting for a real person.

Susan O.

A write in vote for a real person is not a wasted one. Heck, I'd rather see someone write in Tweety Bird for President, but still show up and put in real votes for local candidates and measures that will probably have a more direct impact on their lives and their communities, than not show up to vote at all.

I did a 'throw away' vote one year. The year we had Bush and Kerry running, I wrote in Clinton/Gore. Girl can dream, you know.

For those who think a write in vote isn't going to waste, what difference do you think it makes to write in a vote? Or in other words, what do you think is accomplished or changed by writing in a vote?

I'm sincerely curious and not trying to stir anything up.

Thanks

It would nopt be considered a "wasted vote" if one voted for a third party candidate or an independent, so why would a write-in be considered as such?

When we vote, we not only vote "for" one candidate, but we also vote "against" at least one other. We do have to consider the consequences of this...it has been said that the votes for Ross Perot ended up adding to Clinton's advantage, and that votes for Ralph Nader took away from Gore. But who is to say who those voters would have voted for had that candidate not been in the running?

Our country would be much better off if we were to break free of the two party system, and the only way to do this is to encourage the other parties. I find it rather odd that, as popular as the green party (or parties) are in Europe, here it is but a tiny, inconsequential entry. No matter how you feel about any party or candidate, the greater the choice the better off we are.

I think alot of people will support anyone know matter what as long as our country keeps getting better and breaks us thru these tough times. Honestly after this election is over everyone needs to step up and support whoever it is because negativity will get you no where. Right now I only see 1 man for the job, and I don't want to see another "BUSH" going in and taking over.

I know that the votes are tallied and then it becomes obvious what is happening. It is widely known that the largest write-in vote is "Mickey Mouse". So you can't tell me that the votes are not analyzed to see what the percentages are.

What is accomplished is that when people write in a real person's name, if there is a large enough increase in people doing so, then the 2 parties that are vote hungry would notice as I am sure they have people analysing why people are not voting for them. After all, it is all about winning right? And a smart leader for either the Dems or Repubs would be looking at that analysis and checking out what they could do to capture new voters.

So when it is noticed that there is a large jump in the number of write-ins, they would then ask why are those voter's unhappy. Hopefully they would then listen to what we have to say.

Now that is my realistic view.

My optomistic view is that we would have enough people write-in to where the votes really would make a difference and a different person would be elected.

Oh... and sorry to the person who started this thread for hijacking it as that was not my intent. I just wanted others to know that I would support either canidate as I don't particularly think that either is best for our country. But I will support the office.

THANK YOU ladies for answering my question. I honestly never understood why write ins were done. Now, thanks to you taking the time to educate me, I have a much better idea of the reason for it. And Gary I guess I'm the one who should apologize for hijacking your thread, but I did learn something from it. Thanks again ladies.

I will stand by and respect any person that becomes President. HOWEVER, that respect can be taken away rather quickly by their actions.
