Ok like I said bear with me on this. I havent gone through this before and want to make sure he is ok.

Jack no longer has a coller on, he ate it last night. Which he is leaveing it alone so that should be ok.

THe scab came off of the opening last night. Is it to soon for that? THe cut itself is red and doesnt look to be open, but you can kinda tell there is depth to it. ARound the cut itself it is normal, not red or nothing. Please tell me this is a ok thing? There is nothing comeing out of it.

Here are a few not so good pics of it.........

Actually I think it looks a bit to red. I would just call your vet and ask what its suppose to look like. Tate has two little sutures but his skin is the same color all around it, no reddness at all.

Its not the skin around it that is red. That is all normal pink. THe reddness is inside the cut. IT looks almost like if you had a deep cut and peeled the scab off of it.

Ashley --

Call the vet just to be sure, but I think that is about how Winston's looked only scared to trust my judgement on it since basically moments after being tutored, we were taking him to Northern VA to the hospital for the bladder stone operation and he had staples from that when he came home. I focused on the staples a lot more, of course, but that inciscion (sp?) is about what I think he looked like in that area.

It was left open to drain..... if the skin around is not red it might be fine. I might clean it with peroxide.... Call the vet and ask first.

Well I had to run a few errands this morning and when I came home I checked it again.

I think when I seen it earlier the scab just came off. Now its barley noticiable and alot lighter in color. Not to mention closed.

Crazy me had to finish some xmas shopping. I decided to make goody baskets for my pups, my sisters and my bros. MOstly treats for my bros dog as he dont have much money and the dog doesnt get anything outside of his normal food(he was a stray in). Cant beleive I spent $40 just on treats! Talk about spoiled pups.

Hi Ashley,

That looks like a typical 'puppy licked the incicion' kind of red to me (Im a vet tech) I would dab a little peroxide or rubbing alcohol on it, and if it dosent get better ,or gets puffy, let your vet know.

Good luck!

I would be careful using peroxide on any wounds of dogs/cats. My vet said it actually can damage the good tissue and make things take longer to heal. Just an fyi not trying to sound rude or anything

Ace's cut looked 10X worse than that when he was neutered.

He got home that evening, chewed the collar, then chewed his stitches out (all while we were sleeping at night). When we got up the next a.m., it was too late for the vet to stitch it back up. Doc said leave him alone (he had literally a HOLE in his crotch), and put some "neosporin like" stuff (that he gave us) on it to keep it from geting infected. Ace never got sore from it either, he didn't slow down one bit.

The hole eventually closed up, and he doesn't even have a scar.

Aaaaakkkk you guys--NO peroxide and NO alcohol on open wounds!!!!

Peroxide causes cells to rupture, including the healthy ones at the wound margins, and does more harm than good. Alcohol hurts like a sonofamitch There are far better products out there to be using on wounds, like a dilute chlorhexidene or betadine scrub. The picture I see is what a freshly "unscabbed" wound would look like. FROM THE PICTURE there does not appear to be infection, only inflammation. Yes, he needs to keep his mouth off of it. Ashley's second report sounds like things are progressing normally.

I don't use sutures or staples on the outside of my spays or neuters--my personal preference. I close with a 2-0 or 3-0 subcuticular and found that compared to external sutures, my incisions heal cleaner and with less irritation to the pet.
