    Question about breeding stallions

It's not just the number of sperm produced, it's also the "motility." In other words, you need to know if his "guys can swim." A semen test should tell you. I would be concerned with the conception percentage you are having. Best of luck to you.

    Can feed cause allergies?

Might I suggest you also compare the protein levels on your old feed with the new one? I once knew a friend's horse who was allergic to anything above moderate protein levels & could only have oats. It took a bit for the vet to pin it down, but it is possible. Just another idea.....................

75 - 125 Kansas Minis "OMG Please help by WRITING!!"

Is it possible to get an on-line petition formed for this? I know it's possible, but who would we send it to? The power of numbers is always impressive. What do you think? The petition, once generated, can be signed by anyone, anywhere, once we notify different boards, people, etc. I think it...

    Temperature Drop in Due Mares

We did it religiously one year. Twice a day (same times everyday, like Maryann said)...........got to be very tedius & the mares hated it after a short while. So.......results? Didn't work in any case. Never saw any real difference in temperatures for the mares who foaled..........didn't see...

    What do I do?

I think all your ideas are great, but here's another we've used over the years & people who are interested enough to stop & "feed" the horses, leave here with a new understanding and appreciation for them. Some folks have even ended up by coming back & eventually BUYING one! When I see someone...

    Stressed filly....

Hi Lucy! It's been a while! My solution is a simple one I've used & also suggested to many others who found it works too. Firstly, let me ask you the filly's eating situation? Does she eat alone? If so, it might help to put her with another young one (ideally, another weanling) at least...

Bailey and Traveler are safe in the barn!

Thank goodness they are home safe & sound!! What a edge-of-my-seat story & what a great happy ending......... does anyone else keep hearing that old song - "Won't You Please Come Home, Bill Bailey?" :bgrin Oh, and he IS a beauty! BTW, we once had a very pregnant mare get out ....we had...

    Mare who smells.

In my experience, I have found that some mares do emit an odor similar to a "heat" odor when they are getting close to foaling. It puzzled me at first when I saw it. A mare who had been living full time with a stallion was suddenly being pursued by him as tho she was in heat. She foaled within...

Anyone growing their winter coats yet?

Yep - winter hair coming on here, along with geese flying south. We just have two horses left, but check this out! Yep, Skittles winter coat is coming in white in the right places! She's out of two leopards & was born black as night with app sclera. I knew she'd spot, but I love to see it...

Flehmen/yawning?? Does anyone know why pregnant mares do this?

We had a horse that incorporated this into her "getting ready to foal for real" routine. Sometimes, she'd fuss like many others do, then shut down the routine & go to sleep. But, on the night/day when she added the yawning thing, we knew she was serious about going into labor. That was a...

Introducing new horses into the herd?

Please keep in mind that even if there are only two horses, one of them has to be the boss. That's just the way it is, even if WE can't tell which it is. They are herd animals & someone must lead & someone must follow. They're happier that way too. Everyone knows his place. So, if it seems to...

If Chestnut and Sorrel are Genetically Identical, then

And we have a very fast-draw winner. :risa8: All right Rabbit! Your prize is getting to share my popcorn. Oh heck, here, have a box of your own. I'll just add that tostado can put on the darker red down the legs, thus confusing things just a little further. I don't believe the ruano...

If Chestnut and Sorrel are Genetically Identical, then

I have coat color genetics books that never use the word chestnut, only sorrel. Ok, let's confuse things even further. There's the ruano sorrel and then there's the tostado sorrel. Anyone want to guess what they are? I know, but I won't tell yet. Who wants to play?

    Breeding Question

anitavake said "In no case barn name bred to barn name, that's not linebreeding" I'm sorry, perhaps I'm not interpreting this correctly, but are you saying that horses who have the same prefix should not be bred because it's inbreeding? If that's what is meant, your concept is just plain...

    Breeding Question

Hi all -- I haven't been here for a while, but still lurk occassionally! I have bred half-sibling to half-sibling over the years with nice success in the offspring. I will not breed full/full or father/daughter or mother/son. With the half/half, I believe you need to start with an outstanding...

    Tips on clipping babies

Yep, I teach them to stand tied first. Once they have that down: I let them smell the clippers while they are turned off; hear them turned on from afar & then closer. I don't right away go to clipping, I let them feel the backside of the clippers while they are shut off. Then turned on. I...

    question on poisonous trees

I have no knowledge of poplar trees, but can tell you from experience -- never never never plant red maple (sometimes called swamp maple) anywhere near your horses or where the leaves have any chance of blowing into their pasture. Just a word of warning, hope you don't mind!
