    navicular

I would concur with Margo, regarding a mini potentially having navicular. While there are many stock breeds believed to be pre-disposed to navicular syndrom, A LOT of problems are man made. Poor shoeing, is the leading cause. Shoeing with long toes (believe me, it isn't that easy to tell as a...

death of a great little mini

Certainly a tragedy, preventable? Maybe. For every positive in any particular fencing system, there are also cons. Electric fencing CAN most certainly be one of the BEST fencing choicing for many. If you are using the right fencer, and have it grounded, and make it VISIBLE, you won't be...

Can gelding a horse make him grow taller?

Not a subject that most vets are going to be well versed in, but my research is much like Lisa D's and Rabbit's. The rush of testosterone causes the long bones in the leg to start fusing, so gelding before the onset of puberty will add height. So many min's are, or are nearly complete with...

A pet peeve of mine - this just "drives" me CRAZY

I think the Myler mouthpiece that looks like a mullen, but is actually multiple pieces is the #40 mouthpiece. I picked one up at Nationals to try out from Estate Horse Tack. Very nice guy, said I could use it, and if I wanted to exchange it for a different mouthpiece, I could as long as it...

Anyone in the Western MN area ---

Don't know where in Western MN you are. Around the Fargo area, most of the barns tend to get Dr. Bowman. He has his own traveling dental lab, and does excellent work. He's from Western ND, but with all of the barns in Fargo and MN, he's though our part of the country frequently.

    Ammy poll for amhr

Lynn, I concur, the "local" AMHR shows I went to were well attended as well. I was delighted at the entries and variety of classes available at the Noth East Wisc club show I went to over Memorial Day weekend. It was awesome! Lots of performance classes, and entries! I just show the minimum...

    Cart Question

Generally a "B" sized mini. I think some of the manufacturer's for marathon vehicles have their default set a little longer, to accomodate bigger strides/loping, but 48 is suitable for most 34-38 inchers..though I'd probably feel more comfortable with 49" for a 37-38 inch pony.

    Bathing horses in winter

We have a heated barn and wash rack. Even then I seldom bath through the winter. For January shows, I generally stick to just washing the socks, and tail, very rarely the body(I use lights, so don't have winter coat to contend with). The vac works great, but I still go over them with Miracle...

    Ammy poll for amhr

Kay, I think you're on to something, but not sure that AOTE is necessarily the way to go. It is a little 4-H like in that it discourages folks from seeking out professional help/guidance, probably when they need it the most. Should we be encouraging newbies to break out their own driver...

Wondering about financing a herd expansion

Jill, I'm sure we have plenty in common as well. I very may well have mis-understood what you meant by your replies. It SEEMED to me that your point was that my suggestion was not a very well thought out one, and in fact, was a dangerous practice (per the article). Where the comment that you...

Wondering about financing a herd expansion

Good for you Jill. While I don't work exclusively in the investment industry, I do work in the financial industry as well, and have reviewed the investment strategies of both our nation's largest banks, and their customers, and quite naturally their loans. That is MY specialty.

Wondering about financing a herd expansion

Read the article, which is pretty much where I thought you were going with it, and mostly what I had stated above as drawbacks. The article example of $300 a month in INTERST payments, versus gross pay of $416 to make said payment, would have to be a pretty exteme example. Because, the article...

Wondering about financing a herd expansion

I'm not sure what scenario you would be referring to where folks would roll a 401(k) into an IRA, and then liquidate the whole shooting match, unless they have left employment, and do not have the option of leaving their accounts open? They're not vested? Perhaps you can explain that one in a...

Wondering about financing a herd expansion

Since I'm not absolutely sure of the purpose of your "herd expansion" I'll go ahead and relate what friends of mine have done to finance horse purchases. One is home equity (some credit unions/banks also offer auto equity), the second most common is a loan on their 401(k). I have used the...

    AMHR Nationals Poll

The QH Congress, while a great show, with prestigous wins, is still just a show. If you want to show, you haul up and show. There is no qaulifying, as it is not an exact equivalent to AMHR Nationals. Maybe that is what the majority of folks would like though? The two shows, 4 judges...

IS THIS A SOLUTION TO :

Babies born in December...good one. In the QH world, we have association inspectors looking for babies that have seen not only Christmas, but sometimes Thanksgiving and Halloween!

A sad, sad day at AMHA

A very interesting topic. I'm sure the last mane hair was perhaps to initially make the horses measure smaller, but should have aided in consistency as well. Measuring difficulties is not a problem soley with minis! I can't even count the number of times QH advertised as 16.2 were really only...

    Equine Insurance

I have used Wilkens Livestock Insurers for many years, and have been happy with them. For basic mortality and theft, you also get a "free" colic surgery rider covering up to 1/2 of your insured amount, so if you're insuring a 5,000 horse, then 2,500 worth of colic surgery. When I've had major...

    Show Carts...

Margo, I think you will have a lot of fun with your new cart. I have corresponded with the one builder that you referred to (backlogged, but actually FILLING orders, versus the OTHER company), and was told to get back to him around year-end, he hoped to be caught up. I have been wanting...

    Question on checks for driving

Kim, I'm so with you on most of your suggestions. I too thought that the majority of driving horses were of good quality. There are always going to be pleasure horses mis-entered in the Country, and the reverse is true as well. However, the judges need to made to enforce the rules as...
