    just venting about reporters

I think as a general rule reporters look for the most unintelligent people to interview after something like that. It doesn't matter if it's the south, east, midwest, etc... I just don't understand why they can't seek out "normal" people.

does she look 341 days pregnant?

She looks to me like she's probably pregnant. We have a mare who is a little taller than your mare who doesn't really show at all and keeps us guessing until she presents us with either a full bag or a foal on the ground. Keep an eye on her...

    Need help naming a colt...

This is the first time that we've had a foal go this long without a name!!! So far everything we have is LBS D'Artagnan, LBS Dante, LBS Diamond's Drill Bit, or LBS Dyami and no one seems to like any of the names. He needs a D name as this is our 4th year foaling and we go with the ABC theme to...

Picture of Marbles with a Shire Horse

Sue it was so nice to meet you at the Expo! I couldn't believe that I got to see Marbles in person, especially after I had told my mom so much about what you posted here on LB! It was funny to see the shire's reaction on Saturday during the parade of breeds when you brought Marbles into the arena!

    udders

I will say that for us this year, bag development has meant absolutely NOTHING! Our experienced broodmare's bag never got very big like 2 years ago and our other mare who just had her 2nd foal never had a bag until after she foaled! The 2nd mare did the same thing to me last year. She only...

    foaling dates

We have a mare who is bred no earlier than June 1st and she's foaling out at the beginning of April. Most of the time we breed June 1st and after because we don't want foals in April since it's still cold up here usually. But, I'd say if you want an April foal - I'd start breeding on May 1st.

    Aged mares

One of my favorite mares is 23 and still wanting foals. She threw a beautiful smokey black colt this year.

    all this squeeling ....

Honestly I really think the length of the pecking order being established depends on the horses. If your new guy wants to be higher up in the order I think it's going to take longer. It's a normal process. I don't think that the alpha mare will give up her position at all. I do agree with...

    When do you . . .

We stick with straw for the first week then we switch over to shavings.

Your farm's first bred, first born

Yes, we did keep him. He's four this year and will be getting gelded this summer. We just hadn't gotten to gelding him yet but are hoping to do that this year if we have to have the vet out for something else. He's a mini/shetland cross and isn't registered. I am going to start him this...

    Wormers?

Anyone know if we can use Valbazen for the horses? I know it's from the same family as safeguard and panacur but I want to make sure that it's all good to give to the horses before I do.

Foaling season begins with a BIG bang!

Yes, this is our fourth year foaling... Every year has a letter dedicated to it for foal names. I will take pictures tomorrow when we let momma and baby out, he's still not unfolded yet.

Foaling season begins with a BIG bang!

We welcomed at 12:46 this morning a darling TINY smokey black colt out of our sorrel tobiano mare, Circle A Daisy Mae and by our solid perlino stud, Painted Perfections Picazzo. When I calculated coat colors, smokey black came out to be 2.08%! He was causing trouble already when I tried to...

Personally, I wouldn't take my eyes off of her!

    Round Pen size

60' to 80' is pretty standard. I have some larger big horses, my appendix is 16.2 h and is about 1300# so we made ours 80' just because he's got a HUGE stride to him and he can move better in the 80'.

I think our dog Devin is dying

Oh Marty, it has to be so hard ... I'd go and sit with him. Hug him, pet him and tell him it's OK to go. Just love him like you always have. I'm sorry.

    Pasture breeding questions

Not sure how many times our stud breeds when they're in the pasture since I don't keep a continuous watch on him. But I will say that with the pasture breeding we have 3 out of 3 mares due SOON! So he must've gotten them on their first cycle. WE hand bred him the first year we had him and he...
