    Picking a harness

It looks close. Your breeching needs to be falling a tad higher, and back strap shortened a bit so that when you have a single strap drop it comes down straight, rather than angling backwards. I think the pic I have will show that you want the breeching hitting the widest part of the thigh so...

    Quarter sheet

Didn't purchase. Just use a piece of polar fleece. Polar fleece doesn't tend to fray, etc. so the binding (if one chose to use it) is really just there for decorative effect, not necessarily to "bind" the fabric edges in the traditional sewing sense;) The riding version I have (purchased from...

    Quarter sheet

While I'm sure things could be different under saddle than under harness, I've never had any issues when using a quarter sheet under saddle, and I use one frequently through the winter months! I tend to have my harness saddle cinched tight enough that slippage wouldn't really be an issue...

    Do you have equine insurance?

Lisa, Thanks. We had her for 24 of her 28 years. A nice long run to get to know and love one.

    Iowa Club show

Remembered right after I posted that there was a "horse barn" attached to the covered pen that was supposed to be for smaller venues. I didn't go in it though, and didn't hear how many stalls that building had. I'm guessing with the listed number of animals, and you saying it was in the cattle...

    Iowa Club show

I know the covered pen, as it was the one that was originally behind the horse stall barns. I'm guessing this means that stalling was in the hog barn (only barn I remember riding past that was next to the covered pens)? We were just there showing at the AQHA 7-day run the first week of June...

    Do you have equine insurance?

I know exactly where you are coming from regarding your old horse. I had the unfortunate experience of having just made that choice on a 28 yo mare 2 weeks ago. Good health, but found sweaty with elevated respiration at morning feeding. Vet thought due to good gut sounds on both sides, and...

    Do you have equine insurance?

I do insure my show animals. Cost 3.2% of insured value, $6,000 minimum value through Wilkins. My policy comes with a colic rider, however, I will go back to having major medical as well at my next renewal. You do not get the option of saying "no" to colic surgery for example (because surgery...

    Just a heads up/warning.

Technically, pictures posted by the photographer are already protected by copyright law. Your ideas to tag the photos with identifying marks however might thwart some that might otherwise try to use those photos without your consent. Keeping your photo albums "private" on social networking...

    Who has their horses insured?

I presume you're looking for mortality/major medical/loss of use type insurance? I currently have mortality insurance with a colic surgery rider on it through Wilkins Insurance (equine insurers). I don't insure for the full value, or I guess you could say I self insure the rest of the value...

    Strangles

I had dodged the strangles bullet until this year. Pretty much was a downer for us. All of mine were vaccinated (intranasel) for strangles, but some horses from our barn attended a dressage clinic, and brought a beta version of strangles with them. Didn't seem to matter what horses had been...

I am getting a show cart in a few weeks!

I think this has happened in prior years too. Never have known how the cart giveaway worked that it WASN'T awarded in a particular year. Anyone know?

Difference in Minis compared to Large horses

This varies from horse-to-horse, but I have noticed that my minis, anyway, are more sensitive to sedation than the average full sized horse. My equine dentist (also a vet) pulls the sedative into the syringe, then squirts out all but what is in the needle. That's "just right" for my one guy...

    Technical question - harnessing

I harness very similarly for show, also sans breaching. Maybe I'm not REAL tight on the wrap straps, but obviously tight enough that I haven't felt the need to add thimbles for example. I take the first wrap on the wrap straps behind the tug, then one in front of them before buckling. Much...

    weaning and other stuff

Stella, If it was me, and I knew I had that opportunity to have my mare out for training, I'd use that time to go cold turkey. It's like removing a bandage...rip, and done. Then when mare returns, unless it is has been a couple months or more, keep separate. The emotional as well as nursing...

    CDE in the midwest?

CKMINI, ThreeG Farms in Ames, IA, as others have mentioned is wonderful for VSE's! Earl and Mary are both tops in my book:) I did the camp last year, and had a ton of fun. If you bring help with you, they should be forewarned...they will be put to work, lol, but since I see my folks so...

    weaning and other stuff

Think there have been studies that suggest the least amount of stress on both mother and baby is through the gradual method, with second being separate, but can see each other, as in side-by-side stalls. If you can do the latter safely, it can be ideal. Expect the mare to take in excess of a...

    Iowa Valley Carriage

I ordered one out earlier this year to use for CDEs and everyday. I don't have any pictures of the complete harness off the horse, but do have some of it in use. I ordered mine out with the optional wider saddle, false martingale, and buckle-in traces. I do like the harness quite well, and...

    Question

I hear you on the part about superstition. Carried insurance for years on one of my show horses. Let it lapse, don't know why. Broke his leg in such a way there was nothing that could be done...so, have faithfully carried insurance since that time on my most expensive stock. I don't kid...

    Question

That is the case with nearly all "free" colic riders. However, with my policy at Wilkins, it is 50% of the insured amount. Their minimum insured amount is $6,000 for equine mortality, so $3,000 in colic surgery coverage. I know Agri-Risk's underwriter is typical for the industry regarding...
