Someone told me recently, for a sore throat, that if I rub vicks on my throat and then wrap an old sock around it, (at bedtime) it would help?? :DOH!

What on earth.....has anyone ever heard of this or done this? And does it work?

My mother has always sworn by this, and my memories of childhood are filled with nights drifting off to sleep smelling the fumes of Vicks VapoRub. With six children sharing colds, she probably should have bought stock in the company.

From the other side of the sock, I don't really know that it does anything, although she always heated the sock and that felt good. Having a slimy neck the rest of the night always grossed me out.

Yes !! It feels g o o d !! I do it anytime I have a bad sore throat or chest cold. It is very soothing and the menthol in the Vicks is marvelous ! It warms your neck and throat too......

YES!!! When I have a really bad cold I rub Watkins Menthyl rub on it (it's better than Vick's imo, but harder to find).

I don't do the sock thing, but I only rub it on the front of my neck (I have long hair, and ewww....what a mess if I do the backside), as well as my chest, but I always cover my neck and chest with a facecloth or hand towel. It seems to keep the menthol in better, at least that's what I've found. I also found when I didn't cover where I had rubbed it on, it actually made me feel colder for some reason...not sure if the air hitting it has that affect (?)

but yep...I swear by it!

My Mom used a wool scarf...but the idea is the smae. Boy-oh-boy...it sure did help sweat off the cold. I still do it if the cold is bad, but it has to be REALLY horrible, as I cannot stand the wool, but nothing else works nearly as well. Perhaps that is why a sock is used in some cases...because it is generally easier to find a wool sock than a wool scarf??

Connie you poor sick thing~

Yes it helps. It stinks and is greasy but when I am desperate, I grab my Vicks. Don't forget the hot tea with lemon and honey. Want me to just come over and take care of you? I will!

I'm old enough to remember a wool scarf with camphor oil for sore throats. With the mumps too.

Also, rub the vicks on the bottom of your feet, alot of it and wear heavy socks to bed and it really does help! Don't laugh till you try it!

Marnie...I got that in an e-mail once, and I swear I will try it if I get a cold. I don't laugh anymore at some ofthe "wackiest" sounding old-fashioned cures...as so many of them DO work.

Not sure about the sock but I live with Vicks. I am sick to.......and I know how it is. I cough and it sounds like I am whisteling(sp?), then theres the coughing until you almost puke. Yea not fun..............

OH and I am not a fan of tea so I have been drinking the spiced apple cider that comes in packets like hot chocolate. Warms me up, and is 100% vitamin C.

Vicks also work if you have toenail fungus. I asked my doctor something, and he told me good old vicks rubbed it. It worked better that all those expensive remiedies.

I don't know if this will work if you already have a cold, but when I feel the first sign of a cold I heat a cup of water to boiling, add 1/2 cup of lemon juice and add 1 teaspoon of soda. It tastes horrible but I have escaped two cold so far since I started this when the kids had colds. So maybe it is my imagination but I THINK it works. The only thing is when you add the soda to the lemon juice, YOU BETTER HAVE A GREAT BIG CUP. If you don't you will end up with not too much in the cup as you will have a BIG FIZZY mess all over your cupboard.
