I feel so sorry for you having to look at that everyday! those sores look so painful and icky. I hope that they can overcome this and that your husband did not get his cold/flu from them.

when the first abcess showed up Corinne and i talked about Pigion fever/ brat strangles...their are a hundred names for it, anyway it does look alot like that. i called the vet this morning and was told the results from the tests weren't there but maybe the vet had them with him. the woman i spoke to said she would have him call me, we made sure someone was in the house all day to get his call but at 6:00 i ran out to the barn and when i came back in the vets # was on the caller ID, the time was 6:01. i came in at 6:08 :ugh: . i tried calling right back but NO answer and he didn't leave a message

! i can't believe i missed the call and of course i am thinking it must be bad, if everything was fine why didn't he just leave a message? i have been waiting 7 days...ugggg...if you don't see any posts from me you'll know i have been commited to the phyc. center

: . thank you all for thinking of us, Nikki

Oh Nikki

I have been checking back all day to see if there was an answer. I am so sorry. Doggonit anyway. Are they open tomorrow? I would call the message service and get then to call me back.

I do think though that if the assumed diagnosis was wrong they would have left a message to stop and start something different so lets think positive. It sounds like she is doing better so lets just think that you are doing the right thing and get a good nights sleep.

Take care and remember we are all thinking of you and know you are a bit strung out.

HUGS to you.

I have been reading all of your posts with such trepidation. Know that we too are praying for you to have a good outcome from all of this. This thread is educating so many and through your trials you are helping others who have never seen anything like this. I cant even imagine the stress you are under and hope you have answers soon. Love and support coming from here. I just wanted you to know that you are doing a major service for all of us reading your threads by keeping us all so well informed. Hopefully tomorrow will bring you some peace.

Oh Nikki, I'm sorry. How frustrating for you! I hope he was reached and has called you by now. If it is brat strangles, I know horses can live through it but it is a horrendous ordeal for them. I'm keeping you in my thoughts and prayers that it can be overcome and the rest of your herd is spared.

the vet just called and...the abcess culture showed it is a type of Strep (zoo). he said it has a resistance to the first antibiotic she was on and we are on the right track with what she is on now. there could be a number of things that caused it, he said he sees that strain in cows w/ mastidice (that is spelled wrong sorry) he was going to keep giving it to her but is coming tomorrow to look at the wounds and see if we should continue because she is rubbing her tail so bad. i have wormed her and am doing it again today, but he said it might be from sooo much antibiotic and could be a reaction. as for the other filly it is Rhino and he is going to come and give her an IV of imuno-stimulant (sp?) to help w/ white blood cell production. she seems to be getting worse and is coughing now along with really bad snots. he is suggesting i vacinate all of my horses for the Rhino, which there are only 6 but i think that it needs to be boostered (i forgot to ask) i am wondering how much it is going to cost
default_sad.png
. i know i need do it but more money...uggg. i haven't decided about the 2 that are pregnant, the vet is saying they should be done too. well it is a huge relief to know what is going on but i have a feeling i still have work ahead of me w/ the snot nose filly! i might have missed something so if anyone has a ? please ask. thanks, Nikki

Nikki

Just the Rhino shot itself is not a terribly expensive vaccine. He should give them for about 10 a shot I would hope. I buy them through Jeffers for my pregnant mares and they cost about 7 I think that way but of course they cost more from the vet.

Thinking about you, let us know what the vet says.

Nikki,

I am so sorry that you are going threw all of this. It has to be taking it's toll on you. At least you have some answers now.. Hopefully now, you can get everyone better, soon. I wish i was closer, I would be more than glad to come help

Nikki, I know you are just exhausted. I understand that you are the middle man... where is the owner of the fillies? I certainly hope that the pm you sent me has been attended to if you get my drift...... This is VERY expensive for you, these are not your horses, yet you are footing the bill. Now you have to also pay for your own horses to be treated because of the illnesses of the ones that arent yours...... Perhaps we could set up a relief fund folks.....

Lyn

Nikki, I am so glad to hear you finally touched base with the vet on this. I will give you a jingle either today or tomorrow..or if something comes up call me~~you have my cell #. (call that one first) Corinne

Nikki, I am in no way a medical person, but, may I suggest that you might look at giving her some Probiotics orally. It comes in a tube, simuilar to wormer and you just squirt it in the mouth. When they (or you) are on antibiotics they kill the good bacteria as well as the bad, the probiotics help replace the good stuff. Just thinking that might have something to do with the tail rubbing. It usually is not to expensive. Just a thought, keep up the good work. We will be thinking good thoughts for you.

I just got off the phone with Nikki, this is emotionally draining on her, and she is so stressed from EVERYTHING. I feel so bad for her. If anyone would like to help in any way. Please read my post on the donkey forum. Corinne

Lyn, I think that is a great idea and I wanted to bump this thread back up so more of you would see it. Nikki is so kind hearted and is always helping others out.

So if anyone would like to help her out with this, please go to Corinne's (MeadowRidge Farm) pinned topic on the donkey forum for the information. I know she will appreciate it!

where are the owners?? what are they doing?? Why arent they picking the horses up? I would think they would be paying all the bills including the bill for her horses.

i want to apologize as my post was taken as being derogatory which is not at all what i meant!! I really feel for what you are going thru. I was just wondering why the owners of the horses were not stepping up to the plate. I was not in anyway implying anything bad about YOU. You have gone above and beyond what most people would do.

Kay, all I am wondering is this~~ if you came across a situation like this, would you just let the animals suffer, because no one was coming forward with any answers???? Nikki went BEYOND what would be expected of people to do in her situation. AND lets not try to forget she didnt do it for herself, but for the sake of the animals. I do agree that the owners should be paying for all of this including her time and care and boarding, but they havent so where does that leave her?? Either let the animals possible die in her barn or help them, I think the majority of us would help them and ask questions later! Nikki is being responsible for ALL the bills, as vets in her area (as in my area and alot of others) will only come out if payment is made on account. What vet is going to treat these animals, and not have "someone" responsible for the bill? He dont know the owners either. Corinne

I cannot believe what a turn this has taken!! How you guys take one post and twist it around to mean something i never meant, well i just dont know? I NEVER SAID anyone should not help these horses!!

Nikki has been pming me and I apologized and apologized on here for my short post. I also told Nikki i have been on mare stare for 2 weeks and am averaging 2 hrs sleep per day, this is why my post was so short. And yet I get another pm tearing me to shreds over this. NO WHERE did i say these horses shouldnt be helped or people shouldnt donate to help nikki!!

I was just wondering where the owners of the horses were in all this?? I guess I picked the wrong question to ask!

All you had to do was post that the owners were not willing to step up to the plate etc.

I think its really unfair to make me out to be the whipping girl here. The one you should all be ripping apart is the OWNERS of these horses not me!

I apologized to Nikki. I apologized here. I explained what i meant. Thats all i can do.

WOW .... I think everyone needs to take a step back here.

I think it is a fair question to wonder what the deal is with the owners of the horse, that of course has NOTHING to do with Niki and all she has done for these horses she has gone above and beyond and anyone reading this can see that

I know it has to be exhausting and frustrating for Nikki to not only care for the horses and pay for them but to have to deal with knowing the owners just dont seem to care

Hopefully when all is said and done and you get some well deserved rest you will be able to somehow deal with the owners.
