I really mean it. You dont have to be kind or I wont learn. Tell me if you think I won't make a show person or my horse won't. I am determined to show in a real show. It doesnt matter if we win I love my horses but I dont want to be a country bumpkin either.

Can't help you with the critique but I think your horses are pretty and I LOVE your pinto!! Have fun!!

Your appy's mane and forelock look a little too thick and heavy. You might want to consider thinning them out a bit more. Is the pinto's mane really thin, or does it fall to the left side?

Where was this show??

A couple of things I see:

1. Tuck in your shirt and add a belt if you can doesn't have to be fancy, makes a more polished look, might also want to consider a blazer or jacket over a shirt.

2. The pinto's halter is too low on his nose, needs to come up closer to the pointy cheek bones,a halter being too long can make a horse's face look longer than it actually is.

3. Appy's mane and forelock too thick. I know its hard to have a show halter for every horse but unless your jumping or doing some performance class I wouldn't take a nylon halter in the ring. They hide the very face you want to show off.

This show was in Minden where I live.

Do I just thin Jabonies mane and forelock with that comb that thins them?

Zippers mane is on his left side. He has a nice mane and most of it is on the left side.

See how much I missed at your class Sunny. I am feeling a lot better now. I have more good days than bad.

Are you allowed to wear a shirt and vest as I dont wear my shirts tucked in as I have stomach bulge.

Thanks Karen, I do tend to look down at the horse I will have to practice that at home because it does become a habit.

I will have to get them each their own show halter that is all there is to it.

If you are going to wear a cowboy hat, have it steamed and shaped properly, which can only be done on a fairly good quality hat. Look at any AQHA show picture and see how their hats are very crisp and perfectly shaped with a squared off front. That is a better look. You can find used hats for a little cheaper online. Look at the "X" number to determine the quality. Hair must be contained completely. Hairspray and gel are you best friend!

Don't worry about the "belly buldge", most of us have it. You have much less to worry about than many. Find a good bra that doesn't let you bounce when you run. A nice blazer hides a multitude of sins! No puffy sleaves. Looking crisp and sharp will inspire confidence, which is most important. I love looking at Hobby Horse web site to see what is fashionable. They are good about little tips!

To thin the mane, most literally clip half the mane off from the underside. The mini's manes are often much too thick for their own good, and can cause fallen or broken crests.

Out side of that, you look really good! And the best way to do good at a "big" show is to get out to one!

The are a blast and you will have lots of people offer their help. Keep up the great work and good luck!

PS. Just a few extra tips that may help: 1) Hoof black. 2) Gel for the horses manes. 3) baby oil gel for the horses muzzles to help them shine.

I agree with getting a blazer instead of a western shirt. It will look much more polished, and from someone with some belly bulge (im pregnant and due any day) it WILL hide more than any shirt could. I like the jackets that are a little longer and sit on my hips, hides even more! I haven't seen anyone at a rated show wear a western shirt, but occasionally do at open shows. If you are going to wear a western type shirt at a open show, you want one that fits perfect, not bulky looking. A bigger shirt doesn't hide more, it does the opposite and make us look more "frumpy" lol. Also, be sure to iron and starch it. It defiantly needs to be tucked in, no way around that. I would also add a belt that matches your pants. Very plain, with a plain buckle. Again, this will not emphasize having an extra bulge, it will actually make you look smaller, I promise. The same with show pants or jeans, starched, and fitted, if they crease at your knee and shoe, have them hemmed. On the local open horse shows in halter you might see someone in black jeans and a western shirt, but thats really unheard of at breed shows. I show both, and before minis showed big horses for maybe 8 years? I have different clothes for both types of show.

If your going to wear a hat, it needs to be a very good quality felt hat. The number of X's corresponds with how much fiber is in the felt. a hat with low X's is a cheaply made hat, and will look cheap, and not hold its shape. Get the best quality you can afford. Rods western wear used to sell good quality hats for a great price. I think mine was around $100, and I take it to AQHA congress with me every year where they shape and clean it for free because I bought it there. The fit and shape of a western hat can make or break you. I usually have to get about 1/2" of brim trimmed from my hats so they dont look too big on my head, it makes a world of difference. I also get the squared off quarter horse crease, it's whats "in" in the show ring if your wearing a western hat. Make sure your hat fits correctly, you want it to sit about 1/2" above your eyebrows, no more because it will look like a clown hat thats too small, and no bigger because it will fall in your eyes (or off when you trot) Keep it in a hat can so it keeps its shape.

Move the show halter up maybe 2 holes on your pinto, you want it sitting about a thumbs width below the cheek bones, at the most, or it will make their face look long and out of proportion. Also, if their mane does not want to stay all to one side, you can use a "slinky" hood or mane tamer that will train their mane to stay all on one side, then right before you go in the ring, you can put a little clear gel or hair dressing on their mane to make it look smooth, and lay flat. I prefer manes on the right of the horse, but thats a personal preference.

Your appy is beautiful, but that nylon halter is really overwhelming on its small face. a nice fitted show halter would make a world of difference. Depending on size, the one you have for your pinto might fit, and the blue would look nice on your appy. If they dont show in the same class, could you swap it out between classes? Would save you a few bucks if you didnt have money to invest in an extra halter right away.

I agree on thinning the mane and forelock on your appy, they also overwhelm how small it is. just take your clippers on the underside of the mane, and clip maybe 1/2" wide path lengthwise up the neck, to remove 1/2" of mane at a time. After you do 1/2", stand back and take a look. does it look thin enough? You can always do another path, but you cant glue it back lol. My horse has over 1" clipped off, he just has a really thick mane. on the forelock, clip the underside into a V, by cutting into it on a diagonal so the V left points towards the horses nose. This will thin it out, and you will be able to see your horses face much better. Then, the gel before going in the ring will keep in in place and tidy.

I would use hoofpolish on both horses. Always use clear on an appy, so you can see the hoofs. Most appys have striped hoofs, and they should be seen. On the pinto you could go either way because he has white legs, but I prefer black on everything that isnt an appy. Try both and see what looks best.

Wow, seems like a lot to swallow huh? It's really all pretty simply, and once you do it, it becomes second nature.

I cant say thank-you enough for everyone helping me.

Thanks Diane for the hat, bra and blazer advice and I will look at that website.

Thanks Desiree for the nice comments and the encouragement. I plan on going to Orangeville as there is a big show there and I have to find some more. I wrote the gels down on my list for the drugstore.

Mydaddysjag Do you know what your baby is going to be. How exciting.

It is wow but I printed it out so I have a copy of everything and I am going to follow the advice. I asked for it and everyone took time to answer and I am going to use the great advice I was given.

I wrote the mane cutting instructions on a separate piece of paper as I am going to take it to the barn and I will practice on Archie who is a mini that I likely wont take to a show.

The manes grew that way on those sides I didnt make them.

Don't worry about the bulge ,almost everyone has it except for the skinny kids. Go with a Blazer ,it hides a lot. You can buy one at a thrift store or resale shop. Your appy's mane and forelock needs a lot of thinning. I don't like to undercut too much. So use a thinning comb and undercut a little. A slinky or mane tamer will help to get the mane to lie nice and flat. Use gel on the forelock and the top of the mane. Always use clear polish on an appy . I use black on black hooves and clear on white. Not too many people wear hats in the breed show except for Showmanship. Just make sure your hair is tidy and not falling in your face. It looks like you could use a mane tamer on the pinto. Have fun .ask questions at the show, most people are very willing to help new people.

The only thing I would add is to tip the hat back a little, you can't see your face and it's nice to make eye contact with the judges when you walk in.

I went to the thrift store and bought 4 or 5 Bisiness jackets (blazers) for about $10. I have different colors and will pair them with black pants. All of the jsckets I bought have pockets so I can keep my bait or treats or what ever I need in the pockets. All of my jackets also fall around the hip line. You do need to cover up the untucked shirt.

Great topic, thank you for asking! Does anyone know if there are different expectations in UK shows? Hoping to show in the future.
