I've now taken measures here to keep everyone drinking.....was just late starting them this year obviously. Everyoone has access to heated water now and everyone gets electrolytes in their feed morning and evening.

I agree Charlotte with monitoring water intake for these little guys and we also have had heated water pails & tubs both inside and out. We did not like the individual heaters you drop in tanks so we went with what we thought was the safer option which is the Blue Tubs/buckets with heater incased at the bottom of them. All of ours are stalled at night and in cold weather/bad weather so it is very easy to monitor water intake . Heated pails are a little pricey but well worth it IMO> .

Havent tried electrolytes in feed yet. Are you using Gatorade powder Charlotte?

I have alot of Gatorade powder packets left (1/2 of a case) from when my son was in Iraq, so if it can be put to good use please let me know.

Jeri
Jeri, I would assume the Gatorade powder would be ok since I know some folks give Gatorade to their horses. I just have personally not used it. I sometimes use just plain table salt if I don't have electrolytes, but have you ever tasted the electrolyte powder? Talk about SALTY!!!!!!

And I like those heated buckets and tubs too. I still have one stock tank with a submersible heater in it, but the rest of our heated water is in individual buckets so I KNOW whether someone is drinking or not. and as far as them being pricy.....It's a LOT better than a $1,500 vet bill!

Let us know how it goes with the gatorade please

All winter, I bring a room temp bucket of water

w/ gatorade added and offer it to all 6 of mine

at bed time. All but one will usually take a big drink.

Usually, the enitre bucket is empty.

I just love my new 5 gal heated bucket, SO much better then a 50 gal tank that I had to have a bigger heater in and not knowing if very much drinking was taking place.~

I always feed electrolytes to ALL my horses during summer. I have still been giving them this year and I was going to ask if I should continue thru the winter. I guess I have my answer, THANKS!

Thank You Charlotte! :bgrin

I havent yet tried the table salt on their equine Jr. yet, but maybe I will try that if the gatorade doesnt work. They usally have loose mineral as well as mineral salt and regular salt blocks available at all times inside and out. However, I still worry about them drinking enough in the winter.
