Is skin mottling exclusively an appy trait, or does it show up in non- apps? Just wondered if it has any significance in a solid horse, ie if there is any app breeding behind her that isn't noted on the pedigree. This is a silver bay mare specifically that I'm wondering about with mottling on her muzzle. I've leased her to a friend to breed to an appaloosa stallion, and she is dreaming of spots LOL.

Silver horses can have lighter colored skin and look similar to appy mottling, and they can also have striped hooves, it's not always appaloosa related.

Sabinos will often have mottling on the muzzle.

I believe champagne also have mottled skin?

I've been wondering about this FOREVER!

I have a bay stallion with a dorsal srtipe and shoulder bars... But, he also has a spot in his forelock (not just white hairs, an actual spot.) and mottling around his mouth! I'm so confused on his color anymore.

He is out of Komokos Moon Man and Komokos Fine Wine could anyone possibly do a lookup on them, for pictures... anything? They are AMHA.

Here he is:

Any help would be greatly appriciated!

We have a silver bay mare who is about five. Classic liver color with blond mane and tail. She has appy characteristics on her registration, mottled muzzle area and three dime size spots on her rear. She foaled in January. Yesterday I was out in the lot with her and her filly and noticed she is roaning but in more of a spotted pattern. It looks like it rained milk on her, just little white drops. Any ideas Appy people. Jen at Hairicane where are you?

I have a bay mare who has done this. She does have a pintaloosa sire but was a solid bay until she hit about 4, then developed heavy mottling and has gradually acquired what you are talking about across her back, more every year. She has two solid bay sons, the oldest is now 6 and has some mottling on his muzzle.
