I know that Midas is still too young to do any serious driving training with, but I would like to start some ground training with him. Problem is, I have no clue where to start. I would like to start reading about it before I find someone experienced to help me.

Problem is, there are so many books and videos out there, I dont know what to get.

Any suggestions?

I went to my local library and they have a book borrowing system with other libraries in Ohio. I got to check out several that way, and I was very glad for the chance to view them with out buying them. Some were good but nothing that really sticks out in my memory to reccomend.

I have been thinking about buying Breaking and Training the Driving Horse: by Doris Ganton it got good reviews on the books sites. One of the libraries have it but its been a year now and whomever had it has never returned it, So guess I'll have to buy that 1 too. Has anyone seen this book and can give use a review on it here? Or any other good books.

Hopefully your library can help you out.

good luck

I saw that book repeatedly at the National Drive but it's one of the few I didn't choose to look at and review as it's more for beginning drivers and I was eagerly examining the more advanced books. Sorry!

I've got some limited driving book reviews on the links page of www.cde4vse.com, and I've got a whole 'nother page called "Leia's Library" that I'll be uploading soon with general training and horse books I find helpful.

For now I'd probably recommend Heike Bean's "Carriage Driving: A Logical Approach through Dressage Training” as there are quite a few good chapters on starting the young driving horse including all the groundwork, teaching whoa, and the things the horse should be desensitized to before being hitched.

Hello,

I will "Third" the suggestion of Heike Bean's book ....absolutely fabulous with many superb examples of safely starting a green horse and continuing to add more skills as they progress. Definitely worth the $30 bucks or so (it's on my bedside table right now as we go into the winter months and the "planning" begins!

Patty's videos are very good for starting a horse for the show ring, as Nikki pointed out. I train with Patty, and those videos really do reflect the process she goes through with the horses.

The correct url for Patty's web site is: http://www.clokestables.com

Other books and videos I have found helpful:

The Essential Guide to Carriage Driving, by Robyn Cuffey and Jaye Allison-Winkel http://www.trot-on.com/

Clay Maier's video tutorial set: http://www.claymaier.com/tutorials.php

Introduction to Long Reins

Advanced Long Reining

Train your horse to drive

Every one of the items mentioned above, I have learned a lot from. The Heike Bean Book is good too.

I hardly ever see Clay's videos mentioned, and I have to say they are EXCELLENT. Clay is an incredible horseman. He is now working at the Kentucky Horse Park.
